Question on gun mod for unbalanced guns.
What makes it +15 modifier?
Can I not use the "opposite" guns to eliminate this?
The rules allow you to choose which gun groups you want to fire. Per the rules you could choose to fire only one cannon on each wing to have balanced fire.
Some airplanes have other options noted but not all planes do. For a lot of airplanes, how their guns are rigged in reality is not known to me. For instance, the information Rob quoted about the Zeros and how they fire was not known to me when the ADC was designed so such limits are not in the rules.
I do encourage any refs and players who find such knowledge to incorporate it if they desire per house rules and share the information on the main site so other players may opt to do the same.
As it goes - Rob is perfectly allowed to rule against the rules set based on his desires as referee. It is his game to host. But I do want to be clear that the rules allow you to fire any and all weapon groups as desired and Rob's decision would fall under a "house rule" restriction for this game.

The penalty reflects uneven recoil forces from firing unequal amounts of guns on the two wings. This uneven recoil will cause the plane to yaw slightly sending bullets off target. The pilot then has to compensate for the yaw (usually with rudder) as he fires using tracers, smoke trails or any other evidence of strikes or non-strikes on the target to realign his fire.
I figured the time it takes for the pilot to adjust his fire back toward the target once he starts firing should cost him some accuracy since his gunfire is not properly aligned for a fraction of the burst and those bullets will be more likely to miss.

How are wing root guns treated for determination of unbalanced guns?
From "FW Rules master-34 part 1 (3rd Ed).pdf"
"10.2 –– Special GUN COMBAT Rules"
< bottom of page 24 >
"Wing Guns as Nose Guns: A/C with wing guns synchronized to fire through a fuselage propeller treat those guns as "nose" guns for purposes of gun harmony and concentrated fire rules, (e.g., the inner wing guns of the German Fw 190 fighters), but still count as wing guns for purposes of taking damage."
IMHO, it appears that wing root guns are "nose" guns for Unbalance DRM determination.
