JD,
Situation -
A formation of B17s release their bomb load as "bomb strings" (20.1) while attacking a ship.
The initial aimpoint is a hex prior to the ship's hex, so that the "string" will walk across the ship (also effective for convoys).
The "falling bomb" marker for each B17 reaches its aimpoint and the actual impact hex is determined, using the Accuracy DRMs.
A bomb (or bombs) from the "string" land in the ship's hex.
Q: Which DRMs are used from the Naval Table's "AIR-NAVAL DIRECT HITS (28.1)" ??
1. The B17's original Bomb's final "on target LH" - -45, -60, -75 = -1, -2, -4
or
2. Attack resulted from bomb scattering onto ship = +1
or
3. A combination of 1) and 2)
or
4. Something else ??
This situation requires a bit of a logic fudge.
The game rules are geared toward individual hexes being attacked by falling bombs and while strings of bombs are allowed. The rules fail to say what to do in the situation you describe.
For Naval attacks, I would assume the bombardier is trying to put the string across a specific target ship and the accuracy bonus should still apply, but only for one intended target.
In the case of ship attacks where the aimpoint is not the ship itself. You should still name the "one" intended target of the string. If any bombs of the string impact its hex they will get any accuracy bonus given by the attack roll. All others have direct hits rolled for without any accuracy bonus.
The same would not apply to ground targets. The benefit of the string is to cover more target hexes in a single run. Primary and secondary target selection depends on the delivery method. If dive bombing with strings, then a primary target must be named in the aimpoint hex. An accuracy bonus would apply only to that target if the bombs are on target. If they scatter all targets are secondary targets.
If level or shallow bombing, the primary target for string bombs in each hex is randomly chosen. If the string scatters all targets are secondary targets.
In this case any attack strength benefit from a good accuracy roll should apply to only one primary target of all the primary targets picked in each hex of a string of hexes (random which)
Hope this helps.
