Combined Fire Range Restriction: Defensive guns may only participate in combined fire attacks if their range to the enemy is not more than one greater than the shortest range from that enemy to any member of the formation. This prevents unrealistic shooting from across a formation at targets that are very close to other members of the formation.
(I Understand it better like that)

The rule is intended to also prevent some of the unrealistic piling on by gunners who would not normally be firing in such situations...
One - most planes have limited def, gun ammo.
Two - gunners are taught to defend their plane from direct threats and conserve ammo in the mean time.
Three - a good formation will see multiple gunners viewing an aircraft as a threat at the same time and combining fire as a result. This was a benefit of the formation, not a benefit of any doctrine teaching gunners to team up.
Four - the closer the attacker gets to his target, the easier for the gunner to realize his own plane is not the target and go back to conserving ammo.
Gamers exhibit the opposite behavior. If allowed, they will pile on every gun in range -
Because the gamer wants to get to another odds level. Not realistic, and the rule was created to mitigate the tendency...
