July 4, 2021 -  the Romblon State University Santa Fe Campus, in collaboration with the Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) and the Farmers and Fisherfolks Association, spearheaded a transformative Fish Processing and Value-Adding Training in Pandan, Santa Fe, Romblon. This initiative aimed to equip local fisherfolk with practical skills to enhance their livelihoods, promote sustainability, and add value to their marine harvests.

The training was led by resource speakers Miguel D. Visca Jr., Rey P. Rasgo, Randy M. Gallano, and Rick Vincent S. Liberato, who brought their expertise to the forefront. The sessions focused on innovative fish processing methods, preservation techniques, and value-adding strategies tailored to the needs of small-scale fisherfolk. These new skills empower participants to turn raw fish into processed products such as dried fish, fish balls, and fish patties, opening up additional income streams while reducing post-harvest losses.

The event also showcased the strong commitment of the local government and agricultural sector leaders. Among the notable attendees were:

• Hon. Elsie D. Visca, Municipal Mayor of Santa Fe, who underscored the importance of such initiatives in fostering economic growth and self-reliance.

• Engr. Charlie T. Andres, Municipal Agriculturist, who discussed complementary programs supporting sustainable fisheries.

• Hon. Abraham Visca, Chair of the Committee on Agriculture, who emphasized the role of partnerships in addressing the challenges faced by the fishing community.

• Mr. Rey John Trinidad, Agricultural Technologist, who facilitated the training and addressed local fisherfolk’s concerns.

Their collective efforts exemplified a shared vision of empowering the fisherfolk to thrive in a competitive market while maintaining environmental stewardship.

As the driving force behind this initiative, RSU Santa Fe Campus reaffirmed its commitment to the development of local communities. By providing accessible training and knowledge-sharing opportunities, RSU continues to strengthen its role as a catalyst for positive change in the province of Romblon.
