December 1, 2023 -ย In a unified effort to address climate change and promote environmental sustainability, the Romblon State University (RSU) Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) organized a tree planting activity at RSU-Agpudlos, San Andres, Romblon, on December 1, 2023. The initiative was aimed at contributing to climate change mitigation and reinforcing the importance of reforestation in preserving natural ecosystems.
The event saw active participation from Incident Management commanders, representing various units of RSU, and was led by the Head of the DRRMO, For. Edgar V. Andalecio. Mr. Edgardo F. Fadallan, Director of the Special Project/Advocacy Office, delivered the welcome address. In his speech, he emphasized the critical role of reforestation as a natural solution to combat climate change. Trees, through the process of photosynthesis, absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, with a mature tree capable of sequestering up to 22 pounds of carbon annually. This initiative is in line with the Climate Change Act of 2009, specifically Republic Act 9727, which emphasizes the importance of mitigating climate change and taking action to preserve the environment.
Prof. Eddie G. Fetalvero, Ph.D., Vice President for Research, Extension, and Disaster Initiatives (VP REDI), also provided an inspiring message, highlighting the vital role of collective action in safeguarding the environment. He reminded the participants that educational institutions, like RSU, play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable future by fostering environmental awareness and resilience within the university community.
This tree planting activity is a tangible demonstration of RSU's commitment to environmental stewardship and disaster resilience. It aligns with the university's broader goals of increasing climate change awareness and encouraging sustainable practices among students, staff, and the wider community.
The RSU Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officeโs proactive approach to environmental sustainability exemplifies the university's dedication to not only managing disaster risks but also promoting long-term solutions that contribute to a greener, more sustainable future for Romblon. Congratulations to the DRRMO team for leading this important initiative and inspiring further collaborative efforts for climate change mitigation.
