November 8, 2024 - Romblon State University (RSU), through its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Center under the RSU International Relations Office, has taken an innovative step toward making the United Nations’ 17 SDGs more accessible to the people of Romblon. In collaboration with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) offices in Odiongan and Sibuyan, RSU has translated the SDGs into three native languages: INI, Bantoanon, and Onhan. This initiative ensures that these global goals are not only understood but also embraced by indigenous and local communities, fostering deeper awareness and action at the grassroots level.

The translation process was a collaborative and inclusive effort involving multiple stakeholders. The initial drafts were prepared by Harrow Writers, the official student publication of RSU, with support from the College of Education faculty. These drafts were then brought to native speakers from Banton for Bantoanon, and to tribal leaders in Sta. Maria and Odiongan for INI and Onhan, ensuring linguistic and cultural accuracy. The NCIP offices in Odiongan and Sibuyan provided invaluable support, while local tribal leaders offered insights to refine the translations to reflect the unique nuances, traditions, and values of their communities. This approach not only ensured the quality of the translations but also strengthened partnerships with indigenous groups.

This project underscores the university’s commitment to inclusivity, cultural preservation, and sustainable development. By working closely with NCIP, native speakers, and tribal leaders, RSU has ensured that the translations resonate deeply with the communities they serve. These efforts exemplify RSU’s leadership in promoting global citizenship while empowering Romblon’s communities to contribute actively to the achievement of the SDGs. This initiative not only bridges the gap between global goals and local cultures but also serves as a model for preserving heritage while advancing sustainability.
