RSU and DENR-4B Strengthen Environmental Protection through Memorandum of Understanding 

October 11, 2023 - On October 11, 2023, Romblon State University (RSU) and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) MIMAROPA region solidified their commitment to environmental protection with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the RSU Audio-Visual Room (AVR). This significant partnership aims to raise awareness about environmental issues, promote sustainable practices, and protect the natural resources of Romblon.

The MOU was signed by RSU President, Dr. Merian P. Catajay-Mani, and DENR MIMAROPA OIC Regional Executive Director, Mr. Felix S. Mirasol, Jr. The signing ceremony was attended by key officials, including Dr. Tomas T. Faminial, RSU Vice President for Administration and Finance (VPAF), and Mr. Raymund G. Inocencio, Chief of the Planning and ICT Section at DENR. Dr. Faminial and Mr. Inocencio read the roles and responsibilities outlined in the MOU to ensure both parties' commitments to the cause.

In her Message of Commitment, Dr. Catajay-Mani emphasized the vital role of RSU in environmental stewardship, underscoring the university’s responsibility to not only educate students but also to empower the broader community in environmental preservation. She expressed the university's dedication to integrating sustainable practices into its academic and community outreach programs.

Likewise, Director Mirasol expressed his enthusiasm about strengthening the partnership between RSU and DENR. He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts in safeguarding Romblon’s rich natural resources and ensuring a sustainable future for the province.

As a highlight of the event, the RSU Environmental Ambassadors were officially installed, marking the beginning of their role in promoting environmental awareness on campus and within the local community. The event culminated in the Ceremonial Signing of the Pledge of Commitment by attendees, solidifying their support for the environmental cause.

To launch this partnership, the RSU top management, Army Reservists, members of the Philippine Guardian Brotherhood Incorporated (PGBI), and various volunteers took part in a coastal cleanup drive in Odiongan, Romblon. This joint effort serves as a practical demonstration of the university's commitment to preserving the environment.

The MOU between RSU and DENR represents a significant step forward in promoting environmental education, sustainable practices, and the protection of Romblon’s ecosystems. It reflects the ongoing efforts to align local actions with global environmental goals, especially those outlined in the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

As RSU continues to engage in initiatives aimed at creating a sustainable future, this partnership with DENR highlights the power of collaboration in fostering lasting environmental change.
