Last Minute Halloween Costumes

Abby Guy

With Halloween right around the corner, it is officially time for last minute costume season! If you aren’t a huge Halloween fan, or are just feeling particularly uninspired this year, don't let that stop you from participating in our school spirit day on Monday, October 31st. We’ve compiled a list of some easy, DIY costume ideas that will hopefully give you a few ideas.

1. Coloured T-Shirt Characters

Got a solid colour t-shirt and some construction paper at home? Perfect! You’ve got all you need to make this simple costume. Make whatever details you need to become your character of choice, stick them to your shirt, add ears if necessary (using a headband).

Some characters you could be are: Muppets, Finding Nemo, Winnie the Pooh, Monsters Inc., Madagascar, and many more.

2. Care Bears

If you need a group costume, look no further! Similar to the T-Shirt characters, all you need is construction paper, solid colour t-shirts (or dresses), and some bear ears. A quick Google search will give you a list of Care Bears to choose from… and you can take it from there!

3. Wacky, Waving, Inflatable

Tube Man

Okay, hear us out on this one. I’m sure you’ve seen them before, those tall balloon people usually found outside car dealerships? (If not, please refer to the images, and you are strongly encouraged to go find one in the wild). Nothing could be more funny, or simple, than grabbing some streamers and putting together this quick costume. All you need is a plain outfit - monochromatic works best - and some paper party streamers. Attach those streamers to your arms, and maybe even some on your head, and you’ve got a great excuse to wave your arms around all day!

4. Jellyfish

Although it’s not exactly school compatible, this costume would still work well if you were looking to dress up with your friends. This one uses an umbrella and some paper streamers, that's all! Of course, for the most magical jellyfish effect, use a clear plastic umbrella and some fairy lights from the dollar store, but any type of umbrella will still work. (This one is great if you want to go trick or treating in the rain, we speak from experience)

5. Cowboy

Ah yes, a classic. The cowboy may be slightly overdone, but it is a good way to wear an obvious costume without putting in too much effort. Grab yourself a plaid shirt, some jeans, and a cowboy hat, and you’re all set! Bonus points if you have long hair to braid into pigtails or a spare bandana around to wear on your neck. Maybe have a friend dress as a horse if you want to pair up?

6. A Bunch O’ Grapes

If you happen to have a handful of purple balloons lying around (or a desire to take a trip to the dollar store), this grape costume could be easily done! Blow up the balloons, stick them all over your shirt, and add a green vine headpiece made of construction paper. Voila, you are now a bunch of grapes!

Warning: this one may be impractical for school

7. Pig in a Blanket

If you’ve gotten this far into the article and all of these ideas still seem like too much work, I have one more proposal for you: a pig in a blanket. No outfit necessary, just some pig ears and a nose, and a big comfy blanket. Now you have an excuse to wear pyjamas for two days this spirit week!

Note: All these images were taken off of Google, so if you need extra inspiration, you know where to look!
