Grade 9 Student Representative Interview
Khidr Muhammad
Me: So how do you feel about your win?
Gloria: Well, to be honest, I was kind of relieved? The election took a lot longer than it was supposed to, and my anxiety was skyrocketing.
Diana: Yeah, but I was also pretty excited! We were actually in the same class so I‘m glad we stayed friends throughout the elections.
Me: Gloria, in your election video/speech you talked about furthering equality, and one of the things you mentioned, I think, was better locks on the gender-neutral bathroom. How is that goal going?
Gloria: First off, after attending a few meetings, I have a few ideas on how to fund it. The school obviously won't pay for it, so we're gonna have to do some…
Diana: Bake sales.
Gloria: Yes! Bake sales and fundraisers like that.
Me: Any other changes that you want to make?
Gloria: We want to provide students with a voice.
Me: Don't they already have that?
Diana: Kind of, but we want them to speak out a bit more, and be able to voice their concerns.
Me: So how would you do that?
Diana: Well, in our election videos, we both said that we have our Instagram DMs open for questions and concerns.
Me: So, if you don't mind sharing, what were some personal reasons for running for student council?
Gloria: Well, I wanted more of a leadership role, and like for my future...
Me: Resumes?
Gloria: Yeah, exactly, it looks good on resumes!
Diana: I wanted to give back to my school, and my peers.
Me: How stressful has the student council been so far?
Gloria: Well, the social aspect of it isn't really that stressful as Diana and I are naturally social people.
Diana: Yeah, you need a pretty high social battery.
Gloria: The only slightly stressful thing is that we have meetings every Tuesday, and a lot of other clubs also have meetings on Tuesdays-
Diana: Yeah, cause you joined like seventeen different clubs.
Gloria: But I still try to make the student council a priority.
Diana: We also try to be as vocal as possible during meetings!
Me: That's great! Well, anyway it was great talking to you, but if you’ll excuse me, I have a box of fried rice with my name on it!
