Australian tenth and eleventh graders Safhira and Amayah were suspended for refusing to tie back their hair as they claimed that said style caused them pain. The two girls usually wore their hair in multiple braids, a style considered “too extreme” by the school. This suspension has sparked accusations of racism since both girls claim that Black hair is uniquely difficult to tie into a bun, and that doing so is uncomfortable and unhealthy. Many students who attend the same private school state that they were never asked to tie back their hair, with one decrying the suspension of the two girls as “disgusting”.
A Florida eighth grader allegedly had farts which created a stench so bad that other students had trouble breathing. As a result, he was banned from taking the bus for three days. School officials say that although there is no rule against farting, there are rules against causing a disturbance on the bus. The suspended fifteen-year old, Jonathan Locke, remains adamant that he was not even the one passing gas, rather that it was the student seated in front of him.
Hugging his best friend earned fourteen year old boy, Nick Martinez, an in-school suspension along with his best friend. The Florida middle school he attends has a zero tolerance policy on public displays of affections, purportedly to prevent sexual harassment. The school makes no difference between unwanted and wanted hugs because such intimate displays of affection may be perceived as appropriate by some students, but could be perceived as inappropriate by others. Students can also be punished with a one-day suspension for kissing, and a dean’s detention for hand-holding.
