The Band of Misfits

Dear Journal,

I finished the most annoying math test today and I am tired. So, I went to visit my pen pal friend, Clementine today at our local boba shop, as we planned before. Luckily, I still have the bus pass my cousin gave me. Clementine wanted to bring over her friend Somaya who was close with one of my old friends before they moved away. I was super nervous.

“What if I am accidentally meeting up with a serial killer or worse, what if they don't even show up,” I thought.

But, luckily, I ran into the boba shop with my glasses foggy from the cold when a girl with pale skin, short brown hair, and glasses approached to greet me.

“Hi, you’re Luna right?”

“Yes, Clementine, I assume”, I say politely.

“Your assumption is correct”, she replies with a smile.

I ordered my typical brown sugar boba tea, took it and sat next to Clementine. We talk about our school lives and general small talk. After a while, Somaya arrives and I introduce myself to her in a friendly fashion. We talked about books, and our school lives, and I even let them in on some of the drama going on with the cheer team.

Clementine told stories of her exuberant life. She's always going to concerts and on adventures, and in a few weeks, she's going to another one with her and her friend Somaya. Sometimes, I get jealous of people who live downtown. Their life seems so glamorous with opportunities to have fun. Clementine says sometimes she feels bad for us suburban Haven kids because sometimes it can feel like you live in a small town where everyone knows everyone. Clementine states life in downtown is a lot of fun because you are constantly meeting new people.

Somaya is a kind girl as well. She is shy, but I love her sense of style and taste in video games. She typically accompanies Clementine on many of her adventures. Despite this, at school, they say they are not very popular and have never been invited to a high school party. So the three of us made a plan together. I would befriend a cheerleader and get them to invite me to a party. For Clementine, she would try to find a party downtown that a lot of her classmates are going to. For Somaya, she would also try and befriend one of the popular kids at her school since it does not have cheerleaders. We called ourselves The Band of Misfits, ready to embark on our first adventure together.
