Robotics Club Interview

Exploring The Robotics Club at our School

This month, I decided to provide a brief overview of the Longfields robotics team.

What do we do?

Team 4783, also known as the RoboRavens, is a high school robotics team that competes at Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School (LDHSS). The FIRST Robotics Competition is where teams compete (FRC). The RoboRavens is made up of students, mentor students from surrounding colleges, and mentor professionals from nearby companies.

What’s a regular meeting like?

Based on your grade level, you are divided into different groups in robotics. People form groups, work together on various robot design concepts with their group members, and construct their robots with the help of their team members.

On the general proceedings of the club:

Q: How frequently do you participate in Robotics competitions?

A: We compete against other schools in the area anytime from October to March.

Q: Is experience required to join Robotics?

A: Nope, Robotics is open to all grades and of all experience levels.

Q: What awards are given out for winning a robotics contest?

A:  You can win up to 11 different types of awards such as VRC High School Excellence Award and VRC High School World Finalists.

What our executives and members have to say:

Q: What is your favourite part of robotics and why?

A: “My favourite part of robotics is the use of creativity and building stuff because I believe it has really helped to bring me out of my shell and share my creativity with the world. I think a lot of people think robotics is only for those who are very logical minded, but in reality it uses a lot of creativity such as when you are coming up with ideas and drawing designs” .

Q: What aspect of robotics is your favourite, and why?

A: “One thing I really like about the Robotics club is the friendship element. Since we meet often after school it's a very bonding experience and you get to know your teammates very well. I also enjoy the engineering element of robotics and I would highly recommend this club to anyone who is interested in engineering of any kind”.

Q: Why should someone join Robotics?

A : “Well the first reason I believe someone should join robotics is because it's a really good club to put on your resume, especially if you wanna go into the STEM field. There is also a big emphasis on teamwork and cooperation so you get to work with many different types of people”.

I hope this answered any inquiries you may have had regarding the club and piqued your curiosity in participating. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Martinson at todd.martinson@ocdsb.ca.

Want to join?
