European Football is Back!

Welcome Back Everyone! Welcome back to another school year. One with lots of changes, with improvements, with comebacks, with thrashings likely by tests. All of those will probably happen.
And all of those will occur simultaneously during the 2024-2025 football season. Because, just as you are coming back from the summer after a long and hard school year, professional football clubs in Europe are also returning after a summer of rest to go on and play more football.
Let’s talk about European football.
In August, Europe’s top leagues returned. (The whole club and league system can be seen in my article this time last year here.) There are lots of leagues in Europe. Each country actually has one. These leagues contain many teams, each representing a city or region. In fact, there can be multiple teams per city, (this is where rivalries usually start) and they play each other once or twice a week throught the entire season.
They start in August and go until late May or early June with the Champions League Final. There is a week break in January, and a few other weeks off throughout the year, for example for the International Break. This is when the clubs that have players from all nationalities release their players to go join in two games for their international team.
So, there are quite a few games. Top teams actually play somewhere between 45 - 65 games a season, which, when you divide that by the number of days there are, you realize for club football (time without the breaks) there’s a game every 2 - 4 days. That’s an insane amount of game time. Even worse is that games keep getting added (for the money), but the players are suffering. But, that’s a story for another time.
Now let me explain the seasons.
The top leagues everyone follows are the ones socially known as “The Top Five Leagues”. These are the countries’ leagues which are known worldwide for their competitiveness, their teams and their fans. They are known as “The Top Five” since for the past so many years, the European Federation has rank them as such. These are :
England’s Premier League
Spain’s La Liga
Germany’s Bundesliga
Italy’s Serie A
France’s Ligue 1
As I said, they are known worldwide, and their title races are heated affairs.
Today I’ll be talking about the teams from the first three, the predictions for each and what we have seen so far.
Premier League :
This is undeniably the best league in the world. Every team is a threat, there are no easy games. Sure, there are games which are easier than others, but they can NEVER enter a game as a team underestimating their opponents.
This league has powerhouses Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea and other strong historical teams such as Aston Villa, Newcastle Nottingham and West Ham. I just listed half the league and these are all well known teams. No other league has that type of strength.
The league season started on August 16th, 2024 and is set to finish on May 25th, 2025. There are twenty teams with each playing the others twice, for a total of 380 matches.
We are now 70 games in, each team has played 7 games, and right now the leagues are shaping up. Usually 7 games in is too early to predict final positions, but you can assume that the top 3 probably won’t finish the season as relegated, and the bottom 3 won’t suddenly become title contenders.
Right now, the first place is Liverpool, (my team), and the 2nd and 3rd places are Manchester City and Arsenal, respectively. Those were the 3 title challengers last year, and it looks like they will be the same ones this year. Then there’s Chelsea, who made a good strong start after doing horribly the last two years. There’s the good teams, the medium teams, the eh teams and, finally, the absolutely horrendous teams near the bottom who will likely still be near that position at the end of the season.
You can’t really make too many predictions this early, but I will go ahead and be biased and say that Liverpool will win it and that Southampton, Ipswich, and Crystal Palace will be relegated. Southampton look absolutely horrendous so they are pretty set in for me.
As for the top scorer award, I will predict Erling Haaland and/or Mohamed Salah.
La Liga :
La Liga is a feisty league. There are a lot of red cards and fights. It is a very angry league, but their teams are the best in Europe. The team that has won the most Champions League and the most Europa League titles are each from this League so there is no denying their quality. Arguably the two most famous teams of all time are from this League; Real Madrid and Barcelona. This league also has Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Valencia.
They are 9 league games in, and so there is more information about how the league is shaping up. Barcelona is doing really well, starting the season off with 8 wins out of 9 games. Real Madrid, the title holders, are not off to a good start however, with only 6 wins from 9 and 3 draws. That doesn’t deny their strength though. As usual, the title will likely come from them, and my prediction is that Barcelona will win this year.
For the relegation, I will probably go with La Palamas, Valladolid and another team that I’m sure of yet.
As for the top scorer, I will go with Robert Lewandowski.
Bundesliga :
The Bundesliga is the German league that has powerhouses Bayern Munich and Dortmund. It also has other strong teams such as RB Leipzig, Frankfurt and Leverkusen. This league is smaller than the other two I mentioned earlier, with 18 teams instead of 20.
Right now, they are 6 games in for each team, and so I can not judge by anything. However, it is very clear to see that Bayern Munich, who were very underwhelming by their standards last year, are flying under their new manager, with 20 GOALS IN 6 GAMES! They are first in the league with no losses. There is also RB Leipzig and Frankfurt who are doing really well, in 2nd and 3rd place. Frankfurt, especially, who were 6th last year, but this year are doing really well with their striker Omar Marmoush, who has the 2nd best start to a season ever, with 8 goals and 4 assists. That is two goal involvements per game.
The winners right now are clear and obvious: Bayern. However, you can say that Frankfurt and Leipzig might do a good run.
The top scorer will either be Harry Kane or Omar Marmoush.
There you have it guys, I summarized the top leagues in Europe and what is going on. Hopefully this can give you an idea of what to see and know in football this season as it progresses. See you next month where I will do like I always do, and delve into the Champions League.
