From our young and bright journalists comes their take on the world and our school!
Disclaimer:
Hi, this is Yeonwoo Park. To verify, I am a Grade 7 student. Therefore, most of my articles will be centred around the grade sevens, especially sports-related. Articles for Drama Club or other clubs with grade sevens and eights will have information about grade eights in them; please do not expect equal information about both grades in Middle Mania.
Snow’s on the ground, let the winter hibernation begin! November sets us off with white fluff on the ground, and chill in the air as our busy Intermediates jump into the season of clubs. Here's a list of club events : the main sport of November to December is volleyball; the Drama Club’s new production is announced; there’s already 15 clubs up and running in the Intermediate School! Read on to find out more about early winter in the Intermediate wing.
Sports
This month at LDH Intermediate School, we have a new hot topic: Volleyball! Volleyball season has officially started, with our Intermediate students trying out for teams, participating in intramurals, and even practising in gym class! Our grade seven girls volleyball team was finalized Oct. 30th, with 20 athletes making the team. They typically have practices early in the morning before school, and are training hard, although no exact volleyball tournament is set (yet!). Our grade seven boys volleyball team was finalized 2 weeks ago, with more than a HUNDRED people signing up to try out! The team was finalized on Oct. 31st with 24 individuals making the team. They usually practice for a few tournaments, but the date is yet to be determined.
Intramurals began last week (Nov. 3~7) with groups of people coming based on age and gender for a free recess of playing. This week, students are expected to sign up with their own team consisting of 6 or 9 people and play against other teams. In gym class, the grade sevens and eights have a unit on volleyball as well which lasted 6 weeks and finished on Nov 14th.
Volleyball is an extremely popular sport at LDH this year, with so many people trying out for the teams and going to intramurals. I interviewed some students on why they are interested in volleyball, with questions on what makes it so fun and unique, and experiences on the volleyball team. Their responses were varied.
Q: What do you enjoy the most about volleyball?
Hany Haggui (Gr. 7 Boys Volleyball): It’s intense. I like it because it’s intense and really challenging.
Q: What would you describe being on the team is like?
Imanyah Arif (Gr. 7 Girls Volleyball): I love it because it’s so exciting. There’s always something happening, and it’s always in motion all the time.
Q: Describe your team’s atmosphere in one word? Describe your team’s atmosphere in one word?
Tanushi Sharma (Gr. 7 Girls Volleyball): It’s fun. It’s fun because there’s a lot of teamwork, and all that interaction makes you less lonely and happier.
Drama
Another topic worthy of the theater kids at LDH is the Intermediate school production! Ms. Marci (who’s in charge of the Intermediate Drama Club) has announced the school play: Seussical the Musical! Seussical the Musical is a contemporary production based on the works of Dr. Seuss, the popular children’s author. The story follows a young “Who” (a tiny human-like creature) named JoJo who is extremely creative and imaginative. Along the way, he meets friends like the Cat (from the Cat in the Hat) and Horton the Elephant, who become his friends and travel with him and his creative “thinks”. These are thoughts that appear absurd and funny, and are the creation of JoJo’s imagination. “Thinks” sometimes get JoJo in trouble, which means harm because his parents are the Mayors of the miniscule flower town the Whos live in. Near the end, JoJo’s town is placed in grave danger, and JoJo uses his imagination to get them out of trouble. Seussical the Musical is a funny and interesting production with lots of songs and funny lines. Auditions for the musical are in the first week of December. Please check the Drama Club Google Classroom for more information. I look forward to seeing the production, it seems like the perfect fit for the energetic Drama Club!
