Hey everyone.
Today, we're doing a different type of article. Today, we’ll discuss 7 different historical eras/times/countries, and I will give you a good book recommendation to dive into those topics. I personally have not read most of these, so this acted as a form of a wish list for me as well.
American History
1776 by David McCullough
This book talks about the history of the foundation of the United States as an independent nation and the American Revolutionary War. It follows different soldiers in the ranks of George Washington and the struggles they faced, painting the details of the war and why it begin.
English History
The Plantagenets by Dan Jones
The book follows the large dynasty with its Kings and Queens as England turned from the Dark Ages into a powerful empire. It follows 8 generations of rulers, with one part of the text focused on each monarch.
(An alternative choice : The Anglo-Saxons by Marc Morris).
Rome
SPQR by Mary Beard
This book follows the extensive history of Rome as it rose from a small village into the largest empire on the Mediterranean. The book is easy to read and follow and includes helpful maps and diagrams.
(An alternative choice: The Rise of Rome by Anthony Everitt).
Mongolia
Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford :
This book follows the history of the expansion of the Mongolian Empire and is split into 3 parts in chronological order. The first two parts are over 100 years, and the third part follows the impact of the Mongols on the world right now.
Persians
Persians by Lloyd Llewellyn Jones
This book uses historical evidence, diagrams and artifacts to show Persia as a superpower, and discusses the effect it had on modern day Iran.
Vikings
The Sea Wolves by Lars Brownworth
The book focuses on the Vikings as a nation, rather than as a conquering people. It shows their culture, poetry, art, economy and it portrays them as a true nation that was one of the strongest in history.
Ancient Egypt
The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt by Toby Wilkinson
This book is well detailed and massive at almost 700 pages. It is split into 5 main parts that are in chronological order. The book follows Egyptian history from 5000 B.C - 30. B.C. It talks about different rulers, laws, cultural changes and much more. I truly recommend this book.
So there you have it, 7 different historical topics, 9 different books. I would recommend doing your own research about each book before you begin reading as certain topics discussed or certain perspectives might not be to everyone’s liking person or make everyone comfortable. These are only little snapshots based on my thoughts.
