For the past 15 years, there has been no shortage of astounding zombie games on the market, from revered classics such as Left 4 Dead 2 and Resident Evil to more recent releases like Dying Light and Days Gone. Out of all of these games, the survival genre has taken quite a liking to the concept and has given us great games like 7 Days to Die and DayZ. However, these games, while of good quality, lack a sense of gritty realism that someone would encounter in a (hopefully!) hypothetical zombie apocalypse. Thankfully from the small developer studio The indie Stone comes a zombie game that sets out to capture the true stress of survival with Project Zomboid, a survival roguelite that punishes every mistake with permanent death, making you second guess every decision you make…
GRAPHICS AND GAMEPLAY
Project Zomboid, despite being fairly complex, has a fairly simple and straightforward gameplay loop where you find weapons, scavenge for supplies, level skills, fortify a base and kill zombies until you eventually mess up and die. Although it has a simple gameplay loop, it more than makes up for it with how in-depth every little part of the game is. Car breaks down? Better have the right supplies and parts to replace it. Put a generator inside your house? Have fun with the carbon dioxide poisoning! Or how about crafting insecticides to keep your plants healthy? Project Zomboid has it all! Something worth mentioning is the game’s graphics and isometric view. The graphics are fairly simple and minimalistic, but they do a good job at conveying information without being too distracting. The same can’t be said for the isometric viewpoint however, as it can be quite distracting for new players and cause them to slip up during combat, making it extra easy to die thanks to slippery controls. Fortunately, it only takes a few runs to fully adapt to the controls and viewpoint.
THIS IS HOW YOU DIED
The core selling point of the game is what might turn most people away from it, that being the permadeath, as if you die, your progress is completely wiped away and you are forced to restart with a new playthrough. While this may cause some to avoid the game, it is actually a great addition, causing you to play more carefully and adapt strategies to your current resources and condition, something perfect for those who prefer their games with some strategy and pre-planning. Still, if permadeath isn’t your thing, then you should avoid this game as, while it can be interesting, it can also be very frustrating. Thankfully there are various modes and game options to render it less annoying, so if you’re still interested there are always other venues for you to enjoy the game.
CONCLUSION
Project Zomboid is a must-buy for any fans of zombie survival games, especially with extra difficulty and strategic gameplay that requires you to think on your feet to escape tricky situations. Yet, the permadeath and difficult controls will be off putting to some, potentially ruining the experience. If you’re up for a challenge, then Project Zomboid is a go-to game for any fan of zombie games!
VERDICT:
8/10!
