Exploring The Drama Club at Our School

This month, I will provide a brief overview of the drama club at Longfields.

What do we do?

The drama club at Longfields is designed to engage students in the performing arts and theater. It is an outlet for students to express themselves by acting and having fun. Students participate in different departments such as props, set, publicity, and acting to contribute to a final performance.

What’s a regular meeting like?

Once a week at lunch, the drama club meets in a circle and presents updates on what's happening within the different departments. The stage manager, who is the head of technical aspects, is usually the one to give this update to props, set, publicity, lights, sound, costume, hair, and makeup. They also act as a right hand to the actors on set.

On the general proceedings of the club:

Q: How frequently do you put on productions?

A: We put on a new play every semester.

Q: What is the process of selecting new team members?

A:  There is a difference between what we do for the cast and crew. For the crew, we hold a meeting at the beginning of the year and people pick their top crew choices. Then it is distributed accordingly. For the cast, auditions are held. The participant can choose to say their lines solo or with another audition member. The cuts are made based on who is best for the role. Often productions will have double casting. This is when two people are playing one character on different nights.

Q: Is experience required to join the drama club?

A:  No experience needed, drama club is open to everyone.

What the cast and crew members have to say:

Q: Why did you want to be involved in this production?

A: I love theater, I really like the creative and social aspect of it. I have learned lots of new skills like organization and commitment.”

Max, grade 12

“It's a really good learning opportunity. You learn responsibility, commitment, and teamwork, and get to do cool things outside of school. It's just really fun. You also spend a lot of time practicing, become close with the cast and crew, and get to see your hard work pay off in the end.”

Asia, grade 10

“My older sister was in all the plays in high school. This is my last year, so I thought if I could be in this one it would make her happy.”

Grade 12 student

Q: What’s going to surprise people about this show?

A:  “The set because I worked on it. I'm joking, the actors did amazing as well. It’s gonna be amazing. There are also different endings with different murders and the audience gets to decide the ending so I find the structure of the play is unique.“

Max, Grade 12

Q: What’s your favorite thing about the character you play?

A: “I get to act like a cartoon character which is very fun.”

Grade 12 student

“I get to wear a lab coat and be a stereotypical scientist which is very fun because I have ties with the science department so I get to wear what they wear every day.”

Mason Smith, grade 11

Q: Why should someone join the drama club?

A: You get to meet people who are fun to be around. You also get to learn public speaking and get to make friends when you are not performing.”

Mason Smith, grade 11

“Just to make new friends. I’ve made so many since I joined the drama club. You will find someone who fits your niche.”

Nolan Hollett, grade 9
