We all know the song “Driver’s License” by Olivia Rodrigo, an 18-year-old girl who stars in the show High School Musical: The Musical: The Series (HSMTMTS), and is now nominated for 7 Grammy Awards. The song came out more than a year ago and everyone was blasting it throughout 2021, and I believe that we ALL know who this song is talking about…
Joshua Bassett.
We are still not over the drama that’s been surrounding this song, as well as Olivia’s whole career, and there’s still so much to go around. So, sit back, read the article and soak in all this tea.
There was explosive drama about these people already, which then further escalated when Bassett went on The Zach Sang Show and spilled everything. I personally watched and listened to the whole thing and I felt so bad for him. He opened up about his mental and physical health, and how he was tormented throughout the entirety of 2021 by Olivia Rodrigo stans even while he was hospitalized.
Something that Basset talked about in particular was how he didn’t think that Olivia actually loved him. This was mainly because she didn’t say a word to her fans or to him about the extent of hate he was getting. He said that if you truly loved someone, then you would protect them regardless of the two people’s status. Nonetheless, Olivia did absolutely nothing and that was so shocking to me. It is as if she didn’t write “and I still f-ing love you, babe” in “Drivers License”. Not anymore, I guess.
The songs that mainly targeted Joshua are, of course: “Driver’s License”, “Deja Vu”, “Traitor”, “Happier”, “Favourite Crime”, “Enough for You”, etc.
She pinged him out to be this terrible person and made it seem as if she’s so depressed and heartbroken. It was a major part of her marketing campaign to get people to buy her music. It’s essentially her saying, “Oh I’m this sad 18-year-old girl who just got her heart broken, buy my music if you relate,” and people are eating that up. Nobody really questioned what she was doing or saying as everyone was jumping on the hate train all year.
Out of nowhere, Olivia’s song hit number 1 and everyone knew who it was targeting while Joshua Bassett was ALSO a teenager and about to become public enemy number 1. He was harassed for weeks outside of his home to the point where he couldn’t even leave. He was also cyberbullied so much that he couldn’t even use his phone. This was all because of how horrible the song painted him out to be. I feel as though everyone forgets that they BOTH went through the breakup and they were BOTH hurting and everyone was against Joshua just because Olivia was the one who got the streams. He was even heckled at a coffee shop where an Olivia fan kept blasting “Driver’s License” and staring at him threateningly, making him feel uncomfortable.
Due to all the stress he was feeling and all the hate and backlash he was receiving, Joshua Bassett actually got hospitalized. He was experiencing septic shock and heart failure due to the stress. He went to the hospital and kept telling the people “I THINK I’M HAVING A HEART ATTACK” “I THINK I’M HAVING A HEART ATTACK” and they (as in the doctors) wouldn’t believe him. This was also during the height of Covid as well. The doctors tested him and told Joshua that out of every patient in hospital dealing with Covid and other chronic illnesses, he was having it the worst and had a 33% chance of survival.
Let’s take a moment to actually comprehend that. Imagine you’re told that you have a 33% chance of living. Not in a couple of years down the line, but in this exact moment. If it were me, I’d immediately assume that I was going to die. His survival is honestly a miracle, but the fact that Olivia Rodrigo stans were about to kill someone because of their hate is ridiculous, and I don’t understand why Olivia hasn’t apologized yet! Like you literally wrote in “Good 4 u” that “you look happy and healthy.” That’s aged HORRIBLY.
I mean, Olivia Rodrigo is an 18-year-old girl who decided to go on the internet and become a singer which ultimately means she’s going to have fans. Although it’s mainly her fans who are going out of their way to do what they do to Joshua, it’s still her responsibility and her fault! She has to be able to control her fans and make sure they don’t act out of line.
For example, Arianators (Ariana Grande fans) are much more respectful in that sense because Ariana will simply say, “Don’t send this person hate” and they listen. Simply because Ariana herself told them not to do so. However, if you have Barbz (Nicki Minaj fans) let’s say, they are a ruthless fandom and get away with a lot because Nicki cultivates that message. Nicki’s beefing someone or defending someone who doesn’t deserve to be defended every other day. They think that they’re doing Nicki Minaj a favour and it’s going to be the same thing with Olivia Rodrigo stans. It’s like you are sending your fans out to war to beef someone and hiding your innocence behind the fact that you aren’t actually doing it, it’s the fans. Still, I think there needs to be some sort of communication between the artist and their fans. Like isn’t this a part of celebrity training or something?
Overall, it seems that Olivia doesn’t want to take responsibility for her actions (YES, HER ACTIONS) and it’s impacting Joshua. I actually feel SUPER bad for this man and I wish him nothing but the best, honestly :(
