Les Yeux Sans Visage (1960)

Warning

This film includes graphic and deeply disturbing surgical violence, depicted in a serious way.

Summary

Les Yeux Sans Visage stars Pierre Brasseur and Alida Valli and is based off of the book by Jean Redon. This film is about a young woman whose face, other than the eyes, was completely destroyed in a car accident, and her father, a plastic surgeon who will do anything to give her a new one.

Review

Les Yeux Sans Visage (also known as Eyes Without A Face) is one of the best early horror movies I have seen, and is absolutely worth the watch, being a great 8/10. This movie succeeds at being quite horrifying and disturbing, without making people with a strong stomach want to stop watching.

Historical Significance

Les Yeux Sans Visage is an early use of body horror, coming out not long after The Blob (1958) and The Fly (1958). Unfortunately, the film is forgotten about in historical discussion, most likely because it is a French film. However, it is one of the best early uses of body horror, as it does not overuse gore like many other films do.

Leprechaun (1993)

Warning

This film includes violence, intended to be comical.

Summary

Leprechaun is a miserable attempt at a horror comedy, starring the relatively good actor Warwick Davis as the titular leprechaun who murders the “characters” because they stole his gold. Slowly, over the course of the movie you will want to help the leprechaun maul the idiotic and incredibly annoying cast of this film to death, including the child.

Review

Leprechaun is a bad film, failing to be scary, funny, or interesting, resulting in me rating it a 3/10. The comedy is almost entirely underwhelming attempts at slapstick and shock humor, with an occasional splash of ableism added in for flavor. The fear element of this film is lacking suspense, shock, and any sincere attempts to be scary. As a result this film is less scary than the average episode of Scooby Doo.

Historical Insignificance

Leprechaun does not, and never will, hold any historical significance. Despite leading to many sequels including: Leprechaun 4-In Space, Leprechaun-Back 2 tha Hood, and other such garbage, this film is an insignificant speck in history. If you want to watch a horror comedy, go watch any of the Chucky films, the Nightmare on Elm Street sequels, Scream series, or Tucker and Dale vs Evil.
