Introduction

From the end of the winter break to now, a lot went on at Longfields. In this article you find all important dates, highlights and events happening at LDH.

Clubs

Black Excellence Club

For Black History Month, the intermediate Black Excellency Club has been showcasing a new Canadian black historical or significant figure. Figures like Marie-Joseph Angélique, a prominent figure in the advocacy for the rights of enslaved men and women, or Oscar Peterson, according to the Club’s morning announcements a “highly influential Canadian jazz pianist and composer, celebrated for his exceptional talent and profound impact on the world of jazz music”.

Be sure to listen to the morning announcements to hear the latest showcase.

Key Club

Last week Key Club made and sold dozens of Valentine's day themed bracelets. The bracelets were made in one-hour sessions amongst the key club members over the previous week and then sold at lunch and after school this past week. Profits went to Hunger Crisis Appeal through Islamic Relief Canada.

Keep an eye out for more Key club events and fundraisers. Interested in joining? Talk to Ms. Luce.

Model UN

Model United Nations is planning on hosting a conference here at our school, soon in April. This is a chance for students to have fun and debate real-world topics, among like-minded students. Not sure what Model UN is? Don't worry conferences have different levels to appeal to even those who have never tried Model UN before.

In the future, we plan on sending students to CAPMUN, a Model UN conference hosted by the University of Ottawa. This is a chance to test your debate skills among the best in the Ottawa region.

Looking to compete, join or just find out more about the club? See Mr. Snarr in Guidance.

Theatre Club

This past week the LDH theater program has announced a brand new play set to be performed in April. This will be their second show this year! For those who saw “I am Frankenstein” by John Haman, this play will not be as serious, “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon” will be a mess of funny and exciting chaos.

According to Mr Poon, The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon will be “a high octane show that leaves us and the audience breathless by the end.”

Here is the synopsis of the play:

“Two narrators attempt to recreate all 209 of the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm in a wild, fast-paced extravaganza. To make it more difficult, they attempt to combine them into one gigantic fable using Rapunzel, Rumpelstiltskin, Hansel and Gretel, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and other more obscure stories like Lean Lisa and The Devil's Grandmother.”

From the Theatre Club/Mr. Poon

The best part is you can be a part of the play too! Depending on when you read this it might not be too late to audition for a role in the play or become part of the amazing crew!

This is a great opportunity for real world experience on stage or behind stage. It offers more than just having fun and meeting new people, but also a chance to bring a script to life.

See Mr. Poon or Ms. Michelin for more details and ways you can contribute.

Music

Music council this season is working hard to deliver performance after performance. Just recently we saw the LDH Spring Concert Featuring The Ottawa Wind Ensemble, Jr. Concert Band, Senior Concert Band, and joint performance combining the bands too!

Looking ahead we can expect to cheer on the Juniors and Senior as they compete in MusicFest Regionals. Not only that, but after securing 1st place in MusicFest Regionals last year, LDH music headed to Toronto at the University of Toronto for MusicFest Nationals.

Further in the year we are hosting the Jazz counterpart of MusicFest Regionals, which will feature our students in the Ottawa Junior Jazz Band (OJJB) and our Jr. and Sr. Jazz bands.

Come cheer them on March 1st-2nd!

For even more news contact Music Council or see Ms. Godfrey or Ms. Rosenroll (secondary), Mr. Gumaste or Ms. Sheridan (intermediate).

Sports

In terms of sports, our school had ecstatic results in our last tournaments and competitions.

LDH saw great results from the Ski club with one student receiving 2nd place in a tournament at Camp Fortune!

Basketball Intramurals are also starting up from the 20th of February. This is a chance to have some 3-on-3 fun during breaks. See one of our physical education teachers for sign-up information.

Intermediate Panel

Over on the intermediate side, as grade 8s near the start of Highschool, the school’s clubs and various groups held a club fair. Students got a chance to look at all the amazing clubs and courses we have. The Senior Jazz Band, Directed by Ms. Godfrey, performed as well. Parents and new students also got to know more about the Student Council, the Muslim Student Association, Robotics Club, the music program, Model United Nations, Athletic council, Theatre Club (and the new theater production course), and much more.
