Has Marvel Lost Their Shine?

by Noah Aguilar-Matta

Back in 2008, Marvel released their very first film Iron Man. On its opening weekend, it generated an astonishing $102,118,668, which is huge for a company releasing its first film.

Over time, Marvel made more and more films. A few noticeable ones are, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers: Endgame.

However, lately it seems Marvel can’t release any good movies. The question is: why?

In 2021, Marvel released series such as WandaVision and Loki and they did alright. They weren’t the worst, but overall it seems like they aren’t releasing any good quality movies/series.

Not long ago, Marvel movies would snag the top three or four spots on the list of highest-grossing films every year. This year at the global box office, Barbie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Oppenheimer all outgrossed both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. In fact, the latter ranks all the way down at No. 10 for the year (so far), performing below expectations

Where Marvel has really gone bad is on Disney+. Fans have complained so much that there are too many mediocre Marvel Cinematic Universe (CMU) shows that Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, has vowed to slow the churn.

Disney can't just blame superhero fatigue for flagging interest in the MCU.

After all, Sony's animated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse sold more tickets domestically than Guardians Vol. 3. It became Sony’s highest-grossing animated movie and the highest-grossing animated comic book movie ever. The Boys, outperformed every single one of the MCU TV shows released in 2022.

With all this, we can safely say that Marvel has lost their spotlight, unless they can save themselves with one of their new releases.
