The Cat and The Carpets
My wonderful cat, Chiku, who is all of four years old, is just about the cutest living breathing being present in our household. He has been with us for almost half a year now as we got him on June 10th, 2024 at around 8:30 pm. The moment I had him in his box sitting next to me in that car I fell in love with him. He is a chunky gray tabby weighing all of 20lb; he is on a weight loss plan.
Now when I got this beautiful ball of fur I never thought there would be an issue regarding the carpets in our house and the cat as it wasn’t the first thing that came to mind. I turned out to be horribly wrong. As time went on and Chiku got more comfortable with us, he also developed a deep hatred for any carpet in the house. The sad thing is all of our upper level and basement is carpeted along with a big fluffy rug in the living room. Now if anyone reading this might wonder, how bad can it be if the cat hates the carpets? Pretty bad. He uses the basement and upper floor carpets as a scratch post and has slowly started to ruin them. No matter how much I try to train this tiny beast to use the scratch post, he will still use the carpeted areas to stretch or sharpen his nails. This is because we have a rough textured carpet laid down everywhere except the main floor and Chiku is a lover of rough textures. I have had to resort to using sticky plastic sheets to cover the most used areas in order to preserve the beauty of our rented house so my parental figures don't have to pay the price of fixing it.
That is not all, he hates the many rugs laid down in our house too. The one upstairs covering the hallway is a main point that causes revulsion. Chiku is displeased with the arrangement of the rug and refuses to walk on it, he will walk on the sliver of space the rug doesn’t cover doing a pretty cat walk but an unnecessary one. I have tried to bribe him with treats to go onto the rugs but to no avail.
A couple days back we changed the rug in our living room to one that is plush and much more dense. Chiku is displeased with this new change too, it turns out that it is his house and we are just living in it; he will not step on the carpet. I have tried to bribe him with treats but he will stretch his body without stepping on the carpet to eat the treat from my hand instead of actually coming onto the carpet. I have no idea what carpets did to him before, but perhaps it was horrendous as his hate does not seem to fade.
Perhaps one day of the many to come, Chiku will find the carpets worthy for him but for now it seems as if he believes the world is not worthy of him. Nonetheless I love my playful and fluffy beast that has attachment issues to no extent. I will gladly take care of his mini tantrums as long as I get to keep him.
