From our young and bright journalists comes their take on the world and our school!
This September at LDH, our new Grade 7 students stepped into LDH for the first time as part of our school community. This year brings many changes and staples back to our new group of grade seven students; for example, for the first time in a long while the Grade 7 students at LDH have the privilege of having their own locker.
This year’s group, mainly from the four schools, Adrienne Clarkson ES, Berrigan ES, Chapman Mills PS, and Farley Mowat PS, have another distinctive feature: they’re the first “Gen Alpha” students to be learning in this school. With a few exceptions, these 2013-born iPad kids are the mark of a new generation in our school.
While some might think this Brainrot-consumed generation is awkward or unfamiliar with the school, our sevens are transitioning well. Many have already joined intermediate clubs such as the Drama Club, Mathletes, or have been elected as class representatives. Others have joined the Track and Field team and have tried out for the football team. Nevertheless, having the new class-to-class transition is an experience that has proved to be a little tricky for our grade sevens, as teachers have mentioned trash littering the hallways or “illegal” locker visits (sans Hall Pass) during class time. We hope that this will improve as our new ravens adjust to the school.
Now, what do the new students think of our school? After many interviews with our grade sevens, we conclude that the students think that LDH is “very big” and “awesome”. When encouraged to elaborate, they said that “going to the cafeteria is the best experience” and that they especially liked music (“We get to learn new instruments!”) along with gym class, the majority says. According to them, our school could be better by creating more opportunities in art for middle schoolers or extending recess (a typical one). Another popular one was “letting us shower after P.E.”. Even though some of these requests are far-fetched, it’s always nice to hear from the newcomers.
Also, as the year goes on, our new grade sevens hope our teachers and secondary students will continue to support the grade sevens as they find their way around LDH. Whether it’s lending a hand in the hallways, helping someone who gets lost, or offering a few encouraging words, these small gestures can make a big difference.
