Have you ever wanted to play a game that was so absurd, so ridiculous that it makes you question the nature of reality all while falling out of your seat with laughter? Deep down we all want to experience one of those games at least once in our lives. If so, then the Monster Prom series is the best option out there! Known for its unhinged writing, adorable characters and LGBTQIA+ representation, Monster Prom has hit it big and spawned two sequels, with a fourth on the way. So while enduring the agonizing wait for the fourth game in the series to release, Monster Con, why not check out the most recent entry in the series? That being the critically acclaimed Monster Roadtrip!
What is the series about?
In order to have any idea what is going on, it would be proper to get to know the core concepts and their roots. Monster Prom was first released way back in 2018 and is a hybrid between a party game and a dating simulator, in which players take turns increasing their stats and making different choices in parallel to your stat levels to hopefully not make a fool of yourself. If you meet the character’s stat requirements and make enough right choices, you take them to prom and win!
Two years later in 2020, the first sequel was released, Monster Camp. This time there were new characters to date, a new setting and a few minigames to add extra challenge to the experience. Despite being extremely well received, it wasn’t much of a departure from the first game. However, the next game would take things down a completely different road… A ROAD trip…
Now, let’s hit the road!
Monster Roadtrip takes the core elements of the series like the stats, event choices and characters and adds a whole menagerie of new components to make a truly deranged experience. Dating takes a backseat in this game and the goal shifts to getting 20 of a specific stat to reach a final destination, each correlating to the different stats you gather throughout the game.
In previous entries you’d simply get stat boosts for succeeding an event or selecting an action and lose stats for failing an event. This time things work on equivalent exchange. Choosing an action at a location will raise one stat and lower another, or negate gains if you aren’t careful, forcing you to focus more on resource management.
Each in-game week lasts for only a few locations before everyone is brought to a pit stop to rest. There you can exchange resources, add hitchhikers to your car who can add buffs (and debuffs!), and even talk to those tagging along with you for some juicy backstory!
10/10!
Now get out there and have the road trip of a lifetime! I’m Liam Lavoie, and thank you for reading…
