Club Showcase - Eco Ravens

Eco Ravens: The Environmental Leaders of Tomorrow

One of this month’s featured clubs is Eco Ravens, an environmental club composed of keen students who share a mission of creating sustainability initiatives and a goal of promoting ecological literacy here at Longfields.

We’ve sat down with Dahlia Bonnell, grade 10, a club member since her first year in high school. “I’ve had a passion for the environment from a very young age. My grandma taught me how everything living on earth shares the responsibility of protecting it.”

From that, she knew she wanted to do something with her passion, thus when she found out about the opportunity of Eco Ravens as an intermediate via a Raven’s Nest article, she signed up without hesitation at the high school club fair.

When presented with the question of why Eco Ravens is important to her, Dahlia emphasized one important point:

“An environmental club helps spread the word about the importance of sustainability to protect the planet. If people expose themselves to this cause and develop an interest in it at a young age, it can set a foundation for them to make even larger contributions towards environmental initiatives in the future.”

Eco Ravens hosts multiple seasonal cleanups, typically from early fall to early winter after school. Club members and non-members alike are welcome to participate and are eligible to earn volunteer hours. These events last around an hour and provide a simple way to give back to our local community and planet.

Moreover, members can receive education on various environmental topics during meetings, exploring microplastics, fast fashion, and deforestation in-depth, including ways to combat these climate issues and live sustainably. The club also plans to invite more guest speakers to these meetings for further enrichment.

This year, Eco Ravens is working hard to recruit as many members as possible to help work towards more ambitious goals, including collaborations with other clubs, whether it be seed planting or selling eco-friendly products. The most important, however, is inspiring more students to become educated environmental leaders in the community

Meetings are held every Tuesday at lunch in room 340 and are open to all high school students. To see updates and more information, join the Google Classroom using the code xewasok

As students, we hear about the importance of joining not just Ecoravens specifically, but any club in high school.

“I think it's really important [to join a club], especially in high school, for the experience. The experience of being in a club means that you can find people who share your opinions, passions, and hopes. Once you find these groups, you’ll enjoy school a lot more, make new memories, and build a stronger, more diverse, and open community.”

That's it for this month Ravens, thank you for reading!
