My deisgn/engineering strength is my dedication. If I'm having a good time, I will put way more time and energy into building something than is nescessary.
I would like to improve at the design process. Specifically, I need to learn from my mistakes in D&T and focus on how different parts are going to connect together.
Three things I commit to in documenting on this webpage:
Using consistant style rules
Taking photos in the photo room whenever possible
Drafting relfections while I'm still in class and present in the project
These are my first 12 design ideation sketches. They're roughly in order of my interest in making them, so my favorite two (tied) are the clear suitcase and the stained glass. I would also like to give an honorable mention to the hanging speaker mobile which would be really cool but not practical. The design that looks like a marshmallow with a ring of strange mold is inspired by an idea from my friend Ari.
Almost everyone who wrote me feedback prefered the stained glass design, but had concerns about speaker placement and the width needed to accomodate wires.
I loosely combined my top two designs into this one:
I believe it is an excellent project to design and build because assembly should be simple and straightforward. This is important because I want most of the work to take place early in the semester, rather than rushed and squeezed into the week of miderms.
This project is challenging my current skillset because I'll need to be very precise in my CAD, or else the materials won't fit together.
Right now my speaker is a plastic trapazoidial-prism-thing with speakers on opposite sides, a wooden top with an opening for a plant, and decorated sides. The basic structure has been 3d modeled, but I'm struggling with what the acrylic should look like, how to create holes for it in the print, and where to get the perfect plant pot.
My idea is a prism with stained glass inspired decoration. (It's difficult to see in the photo but the speaker's location is marked)
I learned from my prototype that my design doesn't fit in any of the 3d printers.
I need to alter my design so it fits in the build envelope.
