I remind you all of this statistic:
■ 14,040 school hours divided by 105,120 waking hours = 13.36 percent of waking hours are spent in school by age 18.
That means 86.64% of children’s time is spent out of school, mainly at home.
See: https://www.naesp.org/sites/default/files/resources/2/Principal/2004/S-Op6.pdf for the detailed article.
The take-home is, Families make the biggest difference to a child's chances. As a school and a community, we are so lucky to have so many positive parents supporting, promoting and working with the school; praising effort and engagement; and talking to us, always, to make things better. We will be rolling out our habit work to children - and parents in January. Perhaps now is the time you form an even better habit with supporting learning at home...what you do at home is up to you!
Thank you to our parents supporting Christmas Decoration Making during Explorer Afternoons.
The school is looking very festive!
Thank you to our FOLG parents supporting Elfridges Christmas Shopping. FOLG are such an amazing group of committed parents - they could really use a little support at key meetings - a new habit for 2024?!
There was so much excitement from all children.
Thank you also for supporting our economically excluded children ensuring they also had the opportunity to select gifts for their family members.
THANK YOU to all of our active parents working with us to make the difference. I was giving another tour to some prospective parents this week and they asked me, what can we do to support the school and our child (Great question!) I shared the different ways we expect families to learn at home - and model a love of learning:
Reading daily, spellings, Doodle, TT Rock-stars, Themed homework.
I also shared the huge benefit we all receive from the active parents who come to school to support with all of our events and, also, come and support children with reading and learning. It takes a Community to raise a child. Thank you for everything you do!
We had the pleasure of welcoming Rabbi Goldstein to hold a Hanukkah assembly with the whole school. Thank you to our hardworking RWV (Religion and World Views) Leader, Mrs MacKintosh for making these events possible.
With the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, we took the opportunity to make sure the children understand our values of kindness and inclusion. After a thoughtful assembly from Rabbi Goldstein celebrating the religious message of light and goodness linked to the Jewish tradition of Hanukkah, I explained to the children that:
Some people would not want us to invite a Jew to school.
Some people would not want us to invite a Muslim to school.
Some people would not want us to invite a Christian or Hindu or atheist to school.
We asked the children:
Are we those people?
The force of their response was overwhelming and the answer was
NO!
Little Green is an inclusive supportive community and we work together to support everyone in our community. We all have a role to play in making our community work and in benefitting from our shared values - kind, safe, positive, learning. We have not, yet, tried to unpick the complexities of the Israel/Palestine conflict with our 7 to 11 year-olds. However, we have confirmed and committed to our values with the children. We thank you for sharing and living our community values each day!
My favourite part of the assembly, and possibly of the year so far, was seeing Miss Shah lighting the Hanukkah Candle with Rabbi Goldstein. We are all one community - Merry Christmas!
Sustainability Councils
Local Schools Working Together
We are proud to work with the Three Rivers District Council, York House and Croxley Danes in leading the Student Council and Eco/Sustainability Council Forums. Take a look at the website for more information on what the forums have been learning about and the grand plans to drive sustainable practice across our community.
We have also set up an Instagram to share and celebrate local school and organisation actions. We are 3RSustainability if you would like to follow - please do!
Christmas is definitely here. This little bird came to celebrate the sustainability drive with us and remind me how beautiful and fragile our local habitats can be...share local wildlife pictures with me and we might add some pictures to the sustainability forum websites! admin@littlegreen.herts.sch.uk
Christmas gift bags for New Hope
Thank you to all of the children and families for being so generous in our appeal for gift bags for children and parents supported by New Hope. We will have a few volunteer children helping to present the gift bags to the charity next week and will include some photos in next week’s newsletter.
We are delighted to say that we are extremely close to having 100% of all children and parents covered.
If there are any additional donations please do bring these in by Tuesday 12 December.
Stanley's Inspirational Drumming Habits!
We will be driving our Habit work with children in the New Year as part of their Learning Journal reflections. Thank you also to the parents, staff and governors who have agreed to be part of the process. We will be sharing the forms with you soon!!
One inspiration for us all is Stanley who, through developing an incredible habit of practice and focus has achieved the incredible success of reaching Grade 5 whilst still in Year 5. A Drumming Master in the making - all built on GREAT habits. He scored 92/100. Distinction!
This reminded me of the following quote...With the New Year coming, start to really think about your habits
- what habits will decide your future?
