The sun sets on what has been a fantastic year of achievement, success and progress for the Little Green Community. I am still buzzing from the Year 6 Leavers production of Matilda and the Talent Show today. Just scanning the website and the previous Newsweb editions highlights the incredible year we can all celebrate. Thank you to everyone for making the Little Green Team what it is today! But we never rest on our laurels and we have so many exciting plans to come; so many new opportunities for our community to share with in September; so many chances to be even better. Watch this space!
However, I have one particular failing for which I want to personally and publicly apologise. As a headteacher and a school, we have not managed to support the whole community to understand how we can best support our whole community to learn to behave and be a positive part of the community for future generations. As you would expect from Little Green, our careful research shows the best way to do this in bucket loads and we will do far more workshops in the coming terms to support everyone to understand and to help us do the best for everyone. But for now, inspired by our recent poetry competition, I thought I'd start the conversation in the medium of poetry.
'Someone should do something about those children.'
Someone should do something about those children.
As a headteacher who knows things, some things I wish were just not real.
I wish I could tell you so you would understand and empathise,
but everything is confidential these days - a confidence of ignorance.
Someone should do something about those children.
But I can't tell you about that child.
Perhaps I can tell you about those children...
Those children, whose parents struggle with substance abuse and so leave their children to make their own dinner - or don't.
Who wash their own clothes - or don't.
Who look after their siblings the best they know how - the way they were looked after - with a belt or a fist.
Who come to school looking for safety and kindness...
And are laughed at, or judged because they don't know how to read - but who read with them?
Or can't tie their shoelaces - but who showed them?
Or can't cry anymore because crying doesn't make anything better.
Crying is embarrassing. Children laugh - but not kindly.
Those children who are missed from the invite to a party.
A party all their classmates talk about- turning the knife of isolation and loneliness and unbelonging.
A knife twisted with every comment, conversation and look from peers and parents.
It hurts so much.
Those children who use their bodies to communicate their pain because no one taught them how to use the words.
Those children whose parents don't look after them,
because they are dead, or mentally unwell, or locked up, or were never taught themselves.
Those children who don't know what consistent love feels like.
Those children so much less fortunate than our own.
Those children who deserve the unwavering love of their community.
Someone should do something about those children.
That, we can agree on.
Have a lovely summer and I look forward to talking with you all in September.
After considering 47 poetry entries, the children of Little Green voted for their Ethos poem winner: Congratulations to Millie for her Little Green Poem. We aim to have this displayed on the school site (Queue Lee Bennion) and make use of the poems to help develop our review and reflection on our ethos and behaviour approaches.
A huge and special thank you to Imogen and Aarisha for conceptualising the poetry competition, launching it so successfully and running the event with such dedication and authority. Due to this inspirational work, there are many more child lead competitions being planned as we speak. Do consider taking part in the Croxley Nature Photography competition!
Congratulations to the 6E team who ended up eventual winners of the Year 6 Rounders final. Thank you to parents and children for your positive support. We have had a wonderful range of events to celebrate the Year 6 Leavers including the fabulous Matilda production, Leavers assembly, Dress up Day etc. Thank you to the Year Team for this wonderful send off. The Yearbook - produced by Miss Tarbox - comes home today also. Year 6 and Year 6 families leaving us - we will miss you! Enjoy your new adventures!!
Thank you and happy adventures to our Brass Lead
Mr. Ashley Horton!
Despite the heat 4R were able to give an excellent cornet performance in front of parents today. Sadly it was Mr Horton's last performance as he won't be working in Little Green next year. Thanks for him for all the great work he has done teaching brass at Little Green. We are delighted to announce a new Brass Teacher will be joining us in September.
We have been so fortunate to have the Reverend Jon Bishop supporting the Croxley Community for 16 years. He leaves his role but only moves to Chenies so we hope to see him and hear of his own journey in the future. He delivered an inspirational last assembly all about the challenges and excitement of change - see the embedded video (sorry I cannot rotate it!) A huge thank you to Jon for his support in our community. Good luck with all of your new adventures!
A special thank you from Jane who has dedicated a career to teaching and then supported us with her knowledge and wisdom. We will miss her insights and support as a governor and know she is still very busy in the community so hope to see her at events in the future.
Year 5 were invited to participate in the All Saints Church Flower Festival, held 15th - 18th July. The children chose to craft bluebells in recognition of the bluebell woods close to the edge of the school on Little Green Lane. As our role is Eco Council we chose to add a recycled element to our design by using plastic bottles.
Feedback from the Flower Festival organisers was " Lots of people commented on the bluebells & thought they were very imaginative & interesting."
Driving a Growth Mindset - the importance of focusing on process not outcome.
We've had a few emails from parents asking for attainment information for their child and whether they are on track.
Rationale - As a school we didn't add this information into reports because we don't want parents (or children) to focus on outcomes. Research in this area is very clear. A focus on outcomes can lead to a fixed mindset and a reduction in progress and self esteem - see the 9 minute video from Carol for a clear example. Our report letter explains that teacher comments were about celebrating progress and identifying next steps in terms of actual learning.
Here is the government information that explains this.
Government guidance for reporting to parents is to share general progress, brief particulars of achievements, highlighting strengths and developmental needs and, where applicable, any statutory assessment results (for Little Green this means Year 4 MTC and Year 6 KS2 SATs). Our approach with annual reports has followed this guidance and we have focused on recognising children's achievements in terms of more specific learning, and identifying key areas for development, as well as sharing overall progress rather than attainment.
If we can drive a Growth Mindset positive attitude to learning by praising effort and focusing on the process of learning, we will all see benefits to our thriving Learning Community!
Learning outside the classroom!
The amazing Mr Whitelaw celebrating successes with his own outdoor learning.
Mr Whitelaw was part of the four person team and they had to run as many laps as possible during a 24 hour period.
Incredibly, the team including Mr Whitelaw achieved an astounding 2nd place out of fourteen teams running 30 laps - 6 each - to give a grand total distance of 55km each and 330km in total! (The winners did 31!)
Little Green took part in the Premier League Primary Stars Under 9's Mixed Football Tournament last week, hosted by Watford FC.
The team was made up of 10 children from Years 3 & 4 with a mixture of boys and girls. They had 7 games to play and were really motivated to try and play their best and win the tournament.
They did a fantastic job, finishing with 4 wins, 2 draws and only 1 loss and coming in 2nd Place in the tournament overall!
Well Done team Little Green, they did themselves proud and have shown that the future of the school football teams are very exciting for the next couple of years.
Little Green Cartoon 3 by Leo: A final, fun cartoon to raise a smile. Thank you Leo and we hope to see more in the series next year.
