Building a Healthy Learning Community
Building a Healthy Learning Community
Building a Learning Community at Little Green Junior School
At Little Green we want to build a community of learners where everyone is involved in supporting and modelling learning as a community. This begins with the staff. Please see the next section to find out about what the staff have been learning!
Another piece in the jigsaw will be offering regular workshops with parents and children to ensure you understand why we are approaching learning in certain ways and how you can support your children to fully embrace and benefit from these experiences. We are currently planning a trial workshop for New Year 3 parents and families and will be planning a more regular parent engagement offering so you can truly be part of the learning community!
Little Green is a very special learning community and we look forward to increasing the opportunities for parents to come and see this with their own eyes! This begins with our After School see your child's learning and meet their new teacher on Wednesday 13th July. Details to follow!
We talk about research a lot but perhaps don't bang our own drum about how engaged the school staff are engaged with academic research - research to ensure we are doing the best we can for your children:
Banging our own drum...DID YOU KNOW:
We have TEN teachers choosing to complete a Post-Graduate NPQ in education - in their own time! We want to be the best we can be!:
Ms Tarbox and Ms Gay - NPQ In Leading Teaching and Learning alongside their Maths Mastery Training and development
Ms Muckell and Ms Marriot - NPQ in Leading Behaviour and Culture
Mr Hyde, Ms Reile, Ms Rowland and Mr Flint - NPQ in Senior Leadership
Ms Sedgwick - NPQ in Headship
Mr Roberts - NPQ in Executive Headship
We also have:
Mrs Boddy - Already achieved NPQ in Headship and, uniquely, trained to carry out dyslexia assessments - this is not at all common in Inclusion Leaders.
Mr Whitelaw chose to complete the Mental Health in the workplace First Aider Training
Ms MacKintosh has jointly created the new County Religious Education scheme - SACRE!
Ms Brauka has completed a range of on line art teaching courses including Sketch book development and Subject Coordination
Ms Crawford and Ms Shah are about to complete training around the development implementation and impact measuring of curriculum focusing on DT and Geography.
TAs - autism and anxiety training; autism in girls; sensory awareness and autism, Pictoral exchange system, (PECs) training; Mental Health Champion Foundation training; Gambling and Gaming awareness education training to name a few.
This is alongside all of the statutory safeguarding, Health and Safety and First Aid training! We are lucky to have dedicated professionals keen to continue learning, researching and modelling open minds and life-long learning to the children and community. This training is directly linked to our school Development Plans and ensuring that we are learning the best so we can do the best for your children so that they can be the best. Do you know any other primary schools with this level of professional commitment to education and learning?!
Drum banged!
Helen Cox at Croxley Danes invited some of our Year5 children to be involved in a clean air day initiative led by https://www.globalactionplan.org.uk/. Ms Reile jumped at the opportunity! As well as monitoring air quality at different times of the day and in different areas, the children were able to analyse the results with the staff at Croxley Danes on Thursday and featured in Newsround - see link, Channel 4 and Ms Reile was interviewed for Heart/Herts FM. A huge thank you to Helen Cox for inviting us to the party and to Miss Reile for putting in the extra work to make it happen. The biggest thank you to our superstar children who shared their desire to make the world a better and healthier place and proudly represented the Little Green Community to the world.

At Little Green, we say, 'let's see what's on the table'. By this, we mean, let's look at all the options and perceptions and ideas and then work out the best thing to do - even if we already have strong prejudices as to what that might be. This often gets called being 'open minded'. There are two key benefits to the approach:
1. It opens us to new ideas that we may not have considered.
2. It allows everyone to go through the process of considering what is on the table, understanding the multiple perceptions and seeing that there is a rationale for a decision. We are debating the ideas, not people - our egos are not our amigos! This can be called getting 'buy in'.
This reflective approach drove us to seek parental perspectives on mixing classes. Thank you to the huge number of parents who wanted to make sure they contributed to the conversation - welcome also to the Year 2 parents who contributed - a learning community!
As usual, there was a full spectrum of perceptions and reasonable arguments across the spectrum. Considering these elements and the school's own expertise, experience and global perspective, we will continue to avoid mixing classes. However, we will also consider case by case needs when these are in the interest of the children involved. We thank you for helping us to ensure we are aware of all angles before acting.
Some methodology to ensure clarity and understanding:
There were 167 individual responses with the majority of views from current year 3 parents.
Combining the different year group suggestions the some sort of mix = Some parents gave 'other options' mixed between yes, no, maybe and school decision. This amounted to 36.6% versus 64.7% never mix.
There were 29 'other' (17.4% of the vote) Based on the comments this can be split as
Mix - 9, Never mix -14, Maybe -4, Trust school 3. This further increases the Never mix vote.
Comments ranged from:
Due to the unrest they went through during Covid I think they’ve had their fair share of change during their primary education.
to
Can’t support this enough. Allows new learning and friendship opportunities. They need to be able to get used to mixing for senior school.
We can all appreciate the sense of both positions and hope the school's approach of developing lots of in school collaboration across years and family groups as well as case by case moves makes sense to everyone.

After that, in the semi-finals, the team played against the other Croxley Green team and drew 1-1 which put the team through to a penalty shootout and they won this 4-3! In the final is was 0-0 until the last twenty seconds where Krish slotted home for the team and finished 1-0! Wahoo!
The team is very proud of their achievement.
Match report by Olivia and Ethan.
Magical Trees Competition Winner
"Keen artist and participant Freya Grusin, aged nine, is the lucky recipient of a family gift ticket to Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter. This was donated by exhibition partner Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden.
Freya’s artwork read “You tell the owl what sort of idea you'd like, the owl chooses a leaf for you and then the idea transports into your mind and turns into an imagination.”

Lip balms/Cuddly Toys in school:
We appear to have a current craze with scented/any lip balms in school at the moment which is causing a distraction in learning. Please can we avoid lip balms coming into school unless this is part of a medical need in which case do contact the office.
We also have a soft cuddly toys craze. If this is a significant wellbeing need, please do talk to the Inclusion team about this. Otherwise, they remain an unhelpful distraction from learning and friendship. Thank you.
We are very sad to report the passing of our past Gymnastics Coach Mr Bill Lentes:
Bill had been running his Gymnastics club at Little Green School for very many years. He was a dedicated coach supporting many children over the years in taking their first as well as continued steps in gymnastics. Our condolences go to his family and friends and we thank him for the impact and legacy he leaves behind.
