Week 32 10.6.22
Here comes the summer!
Here comes the summer!
Historically, Little Green has mixed up classes in Year 4. When we reviewed this approach in 2019, staff and parents generally agreed that the mixing up didn't necessarily benefit the children, the school or the families: Children and parents lost friendship groups; whilst some challenging relationships were separated, new challenging relationships were developed. The parent body were very split with about 50% trusting the school to decide, 27 percent opting for no mixing and 23 percent mixing. We would like to, once again, hear the parent's perceptions. As usual, we will also be asking the children and staff and considering all of the information and ideas before we reach a decision. We also understand that this won't impact on Year 6 children but we would still love your retrospective feedback as the first cohort to go all the way through the school without being mixed! Please click on the Google form and share your perceptions!

Using our knowledge of circuits to solve a problem
Following Mr Hyde's concerns that Mr Rivers might be stealing information on his Fantasy Football team, 6H were challenged with using their knowledge of circuits to produce an alarm. See below an example of what they came up with.
In Year 5, we love cross-curricular learning. This week, we learnt all about how the Ancient Egyptians and how they made pyramids. We then linked this with Science and were given a problem whereby we needed to build a Lego pyramid using a pulley system that we had designed and made. We had a great time working collaboratively with the other Year 5 classes and made some very effective pulley systems.
In DT, Year 4 have been applying their history learning about what Anglo Saxons may have eaten by making Oatcakes! They also used their maths skills to carefully weigh out the ingredients. They worked well as teams and reflected on how effective their team was afterwards.
As for how the oatcakes tasted, I have a feeling that they will much more popular than the mead they made last term!
This week Year 3 have completed a DT (Design & Technology) project about Smoothies. First, they taste tested smoothies to get inspiration for what fruit they might include. Then, they designed and planned how to make a smoothie by following a recipe. Everyone created a poster about hygiene to remind them of the key rules when preparing food. Finally, he children made, tasted and evaluated their own smoothies.
Lucy Hawking Author Visit
Thank you to Mr Hyde and Chorleywood Bookshop for another incredible author visit. We love being able to expose the children to such incredible talks and experiences!
On Thursday, it was Little Green's pleasure to welcome renowned author Lucy Hawking to share her ideas as an author, scientist and advocate of environmental work. The children were engaged and enthralled and were also impressed to learn that Lucy was the daughter of Professor Steven Hawking who was so famous he featured in the Simpsons! (They were also taught about his development of theories about Black Holes and the origin of the universe!)
Spring Term Congratulations to our House Point raffle Ticket Winners for the Spring Term who received their amazon voucher prize. A huge thank you, as always, to FOLG for funding the very popular prize - a prize voted for by the children themselves highlighting the power of Pupil Voice at Little Green. You have to be in it to win it - good luck to everyone for the summer draw!
We award raffle Tickets for children reflecting the ethos of Community Wellbeing, Attitude to Learning or Powerful Knowledge. We are always looking for children to demonstrate their own best and expect everyone to put all their available effort into their learning. Well done to these lucky winners!
A special FOLG thank you and well done to all the entries for the Summer Fair Brochure. Congratulations especially to those specially recognised for contributing their best and a very big well done to Alex for being selected as the overall winner. I am sure you will agree the brochure looks amazing outside and in - a special thank you to the whole FOLG team for planning and driving the summer fair this year - not long now! Make sure 26th of June is in your calendar!
We are delighted with the ongoing sports successes we are achieving this year. We are also aware that it may be perceived that we only promote sport for a select few children. Whilst we embrace the importance of exposing children to honest competition and selection - real life - we are also committed to ensuring all children have a great range and experience of sporting experiences across their time with us. Through our Sports Partnership and wonderful PE provision driven by Miss Sedgwick, Miss Muckell and Mr. Rivers, we offer the following:
2 intra-year competitions every term (class trophies- see website)
1 year group school sport partnership family competition per year (Cricket - Y6, Fun Run - Y5, Tri Golf - Y4, Athletics - Y3)
Over 50 different children across Year 5 + Year 6 involved in a sports team/event versus other schools or internal matches
Our sports teams focus on 'Compete' mindset where highest performing children in those sports are selected - This year: 1x National Final, 1x Regional Final, 2x County Finals, 7x District Finals, 4x Partnership League Titles!
Inclusive Multi-Sports event running at Croxley Danes 24.06.22 for lowest sports engagement children (Little Green inviting 12 Year 5/6 students)
On the last day before half term, Little Green competed in the Three Rivers & Watford District Tag Rugby Final at St Joan of Arc School.
The team played really well and battled hard against some tough opponents, unfortunately it wasn't to be their day, losing 2 matches and winning once in their final game. The group worked so hard to get to the District final and can be so proud of their 3rd place finish after a great season of Tag Rugby.
Little Green went to Oaklands College in St Albans on Wednesday and spent the day at the Hertfordshire County Hockey Final. The team played 9 matches across the day and were looking to do their very best to represent the Three Rivers & Watford District after winning the District final last month.
A final tally of 28pts gave us 4th place and secured a fantastic achievement for the group to be one of the top teams from across the county.
Wed 15/06: Year 6 Swimming
