1/10: What is Missing? Maya Lin's final memorial project
We worked in like chapter groups today - discussed what we read and began to bring together notes for the class. Notes should focus on 4-6 main ideas, and teach these ideas by building on prior knowledge (of the Tao in earlier chapters and the Foreward, of other texts, of experience, of other connections we can make), plus use of the imagery/metaphor/analogy that helps to illustrate what the chapters have to say about the Tao, the Master and how they function in the world.
Then, jigsawed out to talk with someone from like chapter groups to enhance understanding.
Finally, back to groups of origin to get a more comprehensive understanding of Taoism.
1/9: A Block: HOMEWORK: Read through the notes from the other same chapter groups, come with questions for tomorrow.
In class: we started by watching John Green's Crash Course just for some background in a quick take.

1/8: HOMEWORK: Continue to work on the chapters in the Tao to get ready for groups tomorrow.
In class, we began work to jigsaw the Tao.
1/7: HOMEWORK: Please read the prompts for the exam and come with questions tomorrow.
In class: We worked with the definition of the Tao, first by looking at Qin Fing's Civilization Landscape and then by revisting the Tao itself to look for properties explicit in the text, properties implied and associations you can make, bringing to bear what you know.
1/4: HOMEWORK: Please finish reading and marking up the first 5 chapters of the Tao Te Ching.
In class, we talked about the Foreward and worked with the first 5 chapters of Tao. In each chapter, look for a central image or analogy or metaphor, Break the image down (describe what you "see," examine both sides of the equation in the metaphor (like, what are wll the propteries of a well? How could these each apply to an understanding of the Tao). Mark opposites (yinyang), and try to paraphrase a main idea for each chapter.
1/3: HOMEWORK: Read and respond to the Foreward for the Tao Te Ching.
We looked at Chinese art and listened to Chinese music to as a way into Taoism.
