Noir+

12/19: Strangers on the Train and Hitchcock.

12/16: HOMEWORK: Complete the questions on the back of the film sheet for Monday. The readings are attached below (Lehane and Penzler).

12/13: We started watching Double Indemnity today (see handout below). Notecard due tomorrow.

12/8: HOMEWORK: Read “On Saturday The Sirens Sound at Noon” this weekend. While you are reading, underline the sound images as you read. After you’ve read, on notebook paper that I could check or collect (if necessary), find two specific examples of each of the following: darkness (physical), darkness (emotional), confusion of morality, Lilly Belle as a femme fatale, the main character’s good traits, the main character’s confusion. Test in class today.

12/7: Test prep + anti-her and femme fatale traits. We read "Day of Execution."

12/6: You’ll be watching The Simpsons episode today and looking for evidence of noir traits (complete the worksheet and hand it in). Then, use the rest of the class to prepare for the test. Remember that you need to use evidence from three different sections of the novel (that means you should take evidence form early in the novel, from the middle and from the end). You need a theme that encompasses both novel and film, one that talks about how/why war damages men OR what is in in them that is damaged. You could have a thesis like: Both Kubrick and Remarque show that the viciousness of war forces every man to protect himself at the cost of his compassion for others. OR The novel and the film condemn nationalism as the most destructive force in war.

Pull together your ideas. I am going to move the test to last period on Thursday.
