Evaluating ads

12/15: Part 2: You will need to choose two ads pulled by your classmates – find one whose description you agree with (you agree with your classmate that it’s appealing, or effective, or not effective) and one that you disagree with.

For each ad, read what your classmate wrote and respond to it. (use the lined sticky notes – you can write on both sides) For the ad description you agree with, comment on the arguments that you think were the strongest and try to add to them by making at least three arguments that your classmate did not.

For the ad description you disagree with, present your most compelling arguments in favor of your point of view of the ad. Try to take on directly at least two comment your classmate made, and add two new, original insights of your own.

12/14: Looking for ads: Look through the magazines we have in the room for print ads that catch your eye. Choose three ads – one that you think is attractive, one that you think effectively presents its product and one that you do not think is effective (or that you do not understand).

Cut the ad out and glue it to a larger piece of paper. On that paper, label the ad (use the categories above). Make a list of what you see in the ad, then write a meaty paragraph about why you chose each ad – what makes it attractive, why it’s effective, etc. BE SPECIFIC.
