For the final: You can use the Emily Dickinson lexicon to look up words and get the definitions Dickinson would have had access to in her time. You'll find the link here.
6/11: You can find the film The Man Who Shot John Lennon here.
6/4: Before we end class today: In your groups, identify areas of discussion you have not yet started (and/or finished) about your book. Assign each person one of these. Tonight, identify a close reading passage (at least a page) dealing with your discussion area to examine more closely. On the front the notecard, write down the page number(s) and bullet your close reading findings (these should be substantial – I’d like to see the side filled, so choose two sections if you aren’t finding enough). On the back: reflect on what you’ve found: why does it matter, how does it contribute to the discussions you’ve been having, what new insights have you gained about character, relationship, etc. Fill the card.
6/2: Catcher people: I am going to ask you to make a list of things that are striking you as funny (ha, ha or weird), I am also going to ask you to write specifically about Holden's state of mind in these chapters, how you know it and what is causing it.
My Antonia: I'll be asking you to make a list of the best stories told in this section (stories about people, about the Harling children, about Antonia, etc.) Same as above - give me enough so I know the story (like the story about Lena's brother picking out Christmas presents), then tell me why you liked it. Strive for 5. I'll also ask you to write about the plusses and minuses living in town and how it affects the "hired girls" including the role the Cutters play in Antonia's transition.
5/23: I've attached a works cited aid below for the papers. There's also a sample paragraph that demonstrates how to parenthetically cite Thoreau examples from two different sources. The reading schedule is also attached.
