Winesburg Ohio

1/10: HOMEWORK: Read the last two stories for Friday. In class, see Rushmore and "Death," attached below. We also continued to watch Rushmore.

1/9: HOMEWORK: "Death" for tomorrow. In class, we discussed "An Awakening" and started watching Rushmore.

1/8: HOMEWORK: "An Awakening" for tomorrow (it's likely we will start Rushmore tomorrow). If you want to use a chrome book on the final exam, let me know ASAP. In class: catching up on the stories we read during the snow days: see "Working with Winesburg stories" attached below.

1/3: HOMEWORK: Read "Paper Pills" tonight.

To start, on the front of the notecard: react to what you read in Winesburg. Ask questions, but also work through ideas, insights, etc. that you have about the grotesque, about Wing, about George, about "Hands," etc. On the back of the notecard: Write about small town living: what are the stereotypes of small town living? what do you know (from your experience) about life in a small town? What are the positives? What are the drawbacks? What are the gender differences, economic, etc.? Fill both sides of the card. We talked together about small towns (see notes attached below) and about the definition of the grotesque (page 3) and about Wing, his truth that gets twisted and why, the allegations against him and the language Anderson uses to highlight Wing's innocence and the brutality of the attackers, etc.

Here's an online copy of the book.
