5/30: exam prep (responding to email questions asking for clarification): For the required essay, you must write about three pieces we have studied this year. At least two of these three must be a piece of literature (a poem, a short story, an excerpt from a novel, etc.). The third piece could be visual art (a painting, a sculpture, a photograph) or it could also be a piece of literature. One of the three pieces should be form the Vietnam unit.
The required essay is a reflection (I voice) an it requires you to explore the pieces you are writing about AND to write about how each has changed the way you see an aspect of what it means to be human.
exam prep: The exam view sheet is attached below. Here are the guiding questions of the class. You need to frame your required essay around one of these questions (show me how studying the three pieces of art* you've chosen has prompted you to explore new aspects of the question you choose. * We are using art the way we have throughout the course – it encompasses literature, music, poetry, visual art, etc. You must write about at least 2 pieces of literature and/or poetry (as opposed to visual art) AND at least one of the pieces you write about for the essay must come from the Vietnam unit.
Essential questions from the syllabus (you need to choose one as the central focus of your essay): What is the American Dream? How has that Dream evolved? Who has been included in the Dream, who hasn’t and why does that matter? What cultural factors have shaped the Dream? What happens when America does not live up to its ideals? How do artists of all types reflect, critique, challenge and lead the culture and time during which they live? What/how have events (historical and cultural) been key to shaping American culture today? How are the problems our society faces today rooted in the history of the past 60+ years?
