12/8: If you missed class today: On the front of the notecard: please respond to the data point of the day: A 2014 study published in the sociology journal Social Forces measured the impact of print books in the home on student learning. In 42 countries, they found that the size of the home library (books at a 15 year old's reading level) was the best predictor of reading performance in schools. A library of 100 books resulted in a 1.5 year jump ahead in proficiency. Reading performance is a key indicator of academic success. What do you think about this statistic? What issues does it bring up - around fairness, equity, etc. - what should/can we do? Fill the front of the card.
