1950s+ Photographs

3/5:

3/2: HOMEWORK: please watch the video* (posted on the 1950s photographs page of the website) called The Body of Emmett Till. (I’d split the video up into two parts so you can respond – stop at around 4:00 minutes to respond to these questions, then continue for the rest). As you watch, pay attention to what you see, to its effect on you, to what you think about what you saw, about Mamie Till’s decisions after the death and how she responded, how she used the images and the effect they had, etc.). As you watch the second half, pay attention to the images and videos of the white community at the trial and think about how they are portraying the killers. Pay attention to how the images launched a movement and to the connections being made to today. Choose two images that most interest you (the photographic images shown in the video). Freeze frame those, describe what you see and use those descriptions to help you analyze the message sent by the photograph and why that matters (by the time you ae done, you should have at least a page and half of notes/photo descriptions). * If you have trouble with the link above, try this one

2/27 - 3/1: Here's a link to an article about Diane Arbus' photography in the 1950s that includes reprints of her photographs. Use those photographs to explore her subjects and her view of their humanity.
