Look at the attached files below for "OV Outside Reading (SS through part 1)" for discussion questions for Song of Solomon and Black Ice to help guide your thinking.
Here's where the pictures came from (the microaggressions) we looked at in class today.
Watch this clip from the Stephen Colbert show. Colbert interviews Jabari Asim, who wrote a book about the history of the N word. As you watch, on the front of the notecard, make a list of interesting information presented in the interview. Be listening for facts about the origin of the word, the way it has been perceived and used throughout our history, the exploration of how/whether to use it and why, etc. On the back of the notecard, reflect on the N word as it has been part of your world, your thinking, etc. Tell me what you sparks your thinking from the interview, what discussions or impressions you've had about the word in the past, its usage, what you know about it from history, from pop culture, etc.
Initial bb on race: write about this topic in your blue books for 7 minutes. THINK about our country’s history with race, think about how we have struggled with it as a society, where you think we are now, etc. W.E.B. DuBois said, “The problem of the Twentieth century is the problem of the color-line.” Was he right? Did we solve it?
Respond to the sketch by Rockwell Kent as well (spend four more minutes on that – describe what you see, relate it back to what you’ve written about, etc.)
