Here's some clarification for the optional essay:
You can only use literary works we've studied (NOT including the independent reading book). Use things like BreadGivers, "Woman Hollering Creek," I Stand Here Ironing," What is Poverty?," "H," etc. Make sure that for each character you write about, you tell me what it was that you did not understand about the character's point of view or his/her decisions in life (these should be aspects you did not understand because they were so foreign to you OR aspects that you initially made judgments about, NOT plot points like "I didn't understand Sarah had to sell coal"), then give me examples that helped you to better understand and tell me why they helped you (be specific and clear).
