Facing it and other materials

We are working on this unit in order to 1) explore the ways in which those who have fought in war convey their experiences through art and through conversation and 2) to work on synthesis between three pieces.

Read "Facing It" (attached) and mark the poem up. Look for images that help you to understand the experiences of the speaker of the poem (if you have not seen the Vietnam War Memorial, make sure you look at it here). Use the "Facing It and film Eng 11 + 12") worksheet and find images from the poem that fit into the categories we came up with. You can watch a short film of the poem being read (and discussed) by Michael Lythgoe here.

You will use the same list in order to analyze the other pieces - Larry Heinemann's interview (instructions on the 2nd page of "Facing It and film Eng 11 + 12"), the StoryCorps interview and the Rockwell painting. See further instructions below ("Eng 11 Finishing war + proof paragraph").
