12/16: Finishing Moulin Rouge! React in your blue book. Use the ideas I put on the board to try to push yourself towards connections between novel and film. HOMEWORK: Read through chapter 7 tonight: slow yourself down when Lily explores her art and when she dips into memory (the Rayleys and Mrs. Ramsay and memory of those dead). Take notes here. THINK about her question: What is the meaning of life (161) and the possible answers – “ ‘Life is a work of art’ “ and “ ‘Life stands still here’” (161) and about the connection between art and memory. What is she still trying to understand/explore about Mrs Ramsay and her oversized shadow in people’s lives? How is she using her art and using memory to try to understand the meaning of life? How do art and memory work together? Are they accurate or do they distort? How does all this fit in with Moulin Rouge!? Come ready to be brilliant tomorrow! (finish reading the novel over the weekend)
12/14:Moulin Rouge! continued. Brilliant ideas from your classmates' cards, plus your homework assignment for Wednesday are attached below (read chapters 1, 3 and 4 in "The Lighthouse in addition to the close reading work). Make connections between the film and the novel.
12/11: Moulin Rouge!
12/9: HOMEWORK: Read the rest of "The Window." As you read, apply your newly gained wisdom about the novel, its characters, new reading strategies, etc. to the end of the section. On the back of the notecard FROM TODAY: SHOW OFF - tell me what you gained as you read the end of the section. What insights do you have and tell me WHY 9that ,sans ground them in the text? What is significant in the end and WHY? Be specific and clear. Take risks but explain why you think what you do by grounding it in the text. Prove to me that you read and were sweating. Fill the back of the card.
Your first task today is to pair up with someone who focused on the same person as you, so look for the right color notecard (see the board): Talk about the notes you took, write down the ones that you both found most important on the color notecard, then return to two sections of the chapter last night (a paragraph or so long – write down the page numbers) and close read together. Take notes on the notecard then write WHY these matter (what new insights do they give you, how do they connect with what you knew before, etc.)? Fill the front of the card. Now put yourself in groups of 4 – all different colored notecards and share. Take notes (in your notebook, in your blue book, or with stickies in the book about what others have to share about their characters and you share what you know about yours.
