Bread Givers

I have moved the date of the assessment until Thursday 10/3... Your Oral History topic titles are due on Monday 10/7 as well.

Reading schedule: Read chapters X-XIII for Monday 9/30, assessment due Wednesday 10/2, Read through part two for Thursday/ Finish the novel for Monday 10/7

From Wednesday 10/2 class:

Listen to the report from NPR's Morning Edition about SNAP, the U.S. government's food stamp program and react to what you heard in your blue book. Do this by making notes while you listen (I'll expect to see about 1/2 page of bulleted notes), then react - what do you think about the people they profile? The arguments for and against the cuts? What experts say about the effect of the cuts on families and on the community? Fill at least a page with your reaction.

Then, read the information about apartment costs and minimum wage. Again, react in your blue book, making connections to our discussions, to the radio report and to what we've heard and talked about in terms of freedom from want as an American ideal. Fill at least a page.

Assessment grade: Finally, on a 4x6 notecard, synthesize what you have learned from the radio piece, the article and Bread Givers. To do this successfully, you'll need to brainstorm connections on one side of the card (notes here) between the three pieces, then on the back, reflect on the American ideal of freedom from want (and/or of equal opportunity) and connect information from today (the article and the radio piece) to Bread Givers in order to examine one of these ideals and America's struggle to live up to it. Make at least three strong, clear connections from the news (using each source - radio and article at least once for honors students. Students taking the course for CPA credit can use just one of these sources if they wish) to the novel (take evidence from different section, including at least 2 from part 2).
