Eastern Lit early days

9/13; The "Surrounded by Sleep" options are attached below. Read those tonight and START writing! Bring questions, suggestions, concerns to class with you tomorrow.

9/12: On the front of a 3x5 notecard, tell me how long the homework took you to complete (reading, marking up and points and connection) and then rate the assignment on a scale of 1 (easy) to 5 (really, really hard) and tell me why. On the back, list 3 interesting things you took away from "Like a Rocket" and 1 annoyance or confusion or new insight.

9/8: We looked more closely at the character of the mother, the father, the complexities of parenting and also how much understanding Ajay is missing because of his age. We also began to explore the nature of God. See "Sharma - Like a Rocket" below for weekend homework.

9/7: See "Surrounded by Sleep close read" below - there is a notecard for homework here.

9/2: We started class with a notecard ("Surrounded notecard" below - it counts as a grade, so if you missed class, please do it), then met in small groups.

8/31, 9/1: We have been using art to try to gain a"window" into culture and what that culture values (using "Cultural Universals" below). To do this, we looked at several art pieces (attached), starting with the Lincoln Memorial. For each, students described what they saw (in blue books) - trying to keep it to evidence only, not analysis. Then, after we talked about that, students analyzed each in terms of cultural values expressed, using the universals.

8/30: We are reading "Surrounded by Sleep" for Friday 9/2. The assignment is attached.
