Invisible Man+

For 3/20: Read the New Yorker blog about Welty’s story and reflections on its connections to Trayvon Martin’s case. On one side of the notecard, choose one of the quotes from Welty about the story or about how she views a writer’s role. Write down the quote then reflect on it in light of her story. On the other side of the notecard, reflect on the issues/connections raised by this writer, by Malcolm Lincoln and his poem today and our discussion in class. Fill both sides of the card. Listen to the first ten minutes of Malcolm London's interview On Point here if you missed class.

You can listen to Joyce Carol Oates reading Eudora Welty's story "Where is the Voice Coming From?" here.

This weekend, please watch "Rise!" episode 5 of Henry Louis Gates' terrific series Many Rivers to Cross.

For your reading Thursday 3/13: (excerpt from Invisible Man for honors credit and “How It Feels To Be Colored Me” for CPA credit), choose two quotes from the text that you think are essential to understanding the writer’s style and point of view. Copy the quote down (with page number) then write about WHY it matters. Make sure that you put the quote in context, break it down for me as you understand it (look at language too) and how it connects to the whole.(one quote on each side of the index card)
