3/8: We watched CNN 10 (see the link on the CNN 10 page) and we talked about images from the poems (see "images and poetry in Eng 11" attached).
3/7: We explored together three different poems today (they are attached below: "Piano," "Ask Me," and "next to of course god america i"). We talked them through, then I asked students to choose one of the poems to explore creatively: either to take a line and let it be the beginning of free write or to draw line by line what they see - both are an effort to better understand and gain insights into the poems.
Initial check in (grade): 1) finish the reading check card and hand it in if you did not, 2) brainstorm a list of research topic you would be interested in - we talked about researching local history, so that's where I would like to start, but I will entertain other ideas as well, 3) look at your BE words - choose one and either tell me two ways you have put it into action recently or make a plan for two ways you will, 4) look at your grades and your goals and either tell me three specific ways you have worked toward your goals OR three specific plans you can make to do so.
3/6: We read our independent books today: Reading check: on the front of the notecard, tell me the book title, where you are in your book (what page you are on, what happened in today’s reading and either what character you like best and why OR what character do you find annoying/unbelievable and WHY. On the back: choose one line from the reading today that you find either particularly memorable or particularly important (to the plot, to the characterization, etc.) . Copy down the quote and the page number, then tell my why you chose it (fill the back of the card).
3/3: Today, I want you to think about something that is part of your everyday life: The Pledge of Allegiance (attached below). To start, on a piece of white lined paper, write 4-6 sentences (or so) about your experience with the Pledge of Allegiance. Did you say it this morning? Why or why not? Do you think about it when you say it or is it rote? Was there every a time when you thought a lot about it? When and Why?
Then, read the article about the Pledge of Allegiance (as you will see, the Pledge has changed over time). As you read, make a list of important facts about how and why the Pledge started (at least 4 facts for this), a list of changes to the Pledge over time (at least 5 facts here) and challenges to the Pledge from Americans (at least 4 facts here).
When you are finished, look over your facts and pull out one from each category (why the Pledge started, the changes over time and the challenges) that you find particularly important and interesting. Write down the fact and then tell me (in 3-6 sentences) why that fact matters (how did it challenge your thinking, how does it add to your thinking, etc.?). Be specific so I can understand what you are thinking.
3/2: We read for 20 minutes today and created action plans for the goals we set earlier. Here's the extra credit CNN10 video (March 2).
3/1: We read in class today for 25 minutes and talked through some Chemistry.
