Year 9 Food & Me
Subject Prospectus - Technology
What am I eating? Why eat this food? These are basic questions that many ask about the foods we eat. This unit of study will work towards the answers to these questions.
What will I learn?
During the semester, students will explore food though the senses, nutritional content, and the limitations allergies and diets can place on a personal ability to maintain a healthy eating pattern. Labeling of food will be researched along with the mixed messages shared with us that can lead to confusion when we are trying to make our food choices. All of this will journey towards the knowledge and skill set to develop food solutions for healthy eating.
What will I do?
Through working in a safe and hygienic manner, students will gain useful practical skills and knowledge and apply problem-solving techniques in the course of their work. Students will analysis their own diets and, with the knowledge learnt, provide a food product that can improve their eating habits. The "how our daily food choices fuel the human body for every day functioning" will be part of this exploration.
Students need to participate in the range of practical activities that support the learning throughout this unit.
What will this lead to?
The knowledge of this unit is strongly linked to VCE Food Studies. This unit can also enable students to make healthier food choices during the Year 10 Food Units - Food Studies, Food an Industry and Cafe Culture. These skills are skills that can be applied to life, work or further studies in the VCE and in some tertiary courses.
