Year 7 Food Studies is a valuable study for students that provides not just classroom learning but also extremely valuable life skills that can be used in a variety of ways through a lifetime.
What will I learn?
During this study, students will learn about hygiene and safety in a kitchen environment and the basic skills to produce a range of food items. Students will link food groups to characteristics of food and how to select ingredients appropriately for the purpose of a recipe. Influences on food choices will be explored with an extension on sustainable food influences and food waste.
What will I do?
Students will research hygiene and safety guidelines in the kitchen. The knowledge from this research will then be applied in a series of practical tasks for students to gain a growing independence in their application of both kitchen skills and decision making for healthy food choices. Students will have the opportunity to use the design process to design an individual product that reflects healthy food choices and environmental influences.
Students need to participate in the range of practical activities that support the learning throughout this unit.
What will this lead to?
This unit of study will lead to further Food Studies in Year 8, 9 and 10 food electives and begins the journey to VCE Food or VET.
This unit helps provide students with the knowledge and basic skills to safely produce meals and snacks at school, at home and into the future. This subject leads into Year 8 – Food Studies
