Surf Education + Life Saving Skills
The Surf Education and Life Saving Skills unit is designed to provide students with a strong sense of safety when in the surf, learn rescue techniques, basic first aid, signals, beach analysis and beach safety.
Students will learn how to rescue someone, using various techniques and equipment (including rescue boards and rescue tubes), learn basic first aid and work in teams in emergency situations – Surf Life Saving style.
Students will also be taught to use first aid equipment, hand held radios, various patient carries and supports and CPR.
Topics throughout the semester include safety and wellbeing, communication, surf awareness, rescues, resuscitation, first aid and community engagement.
Please be aware that there is a cost associated with this subject to cover use of the Surf Club equipment and facilities. Only COMPETENT SWIMMERS should choose this unit. A swimming test is a prerequisite for this elective – you must successfully complete a 200-metre unassisted swim test to partake in this unit. You will be at the beach/in the water for nearly every lesson in this subject.

Why choose this subject?
After completing this subject you will have a better understanding of the surf and you will have improved your ability in the water. You will have used different rescue techniques and will be familiar with equipment, basic first aid, CPR etc.
It is a fun subject that teaches you life skills that you can take with you into life beyond school.

The skills obtained in this unit will be helpful to those wishing to pursue work as swimming instructors or pool/beach lifeguards.
