Year 10 Science

Subject Prospectus - Science

Science provides an empirical way of answering interesting and important questions about the universe around us. Science is a dynamic, collaborative and creative human endeavor arising from our desire to make sense of our world by exploring the unknown, investigating universal mysteries, making predictions and solving problems. Knowledge is contestable and is revised, refined and extended as new evidence arises.

What will I learn?

Our year ten curriculum aims to assist students in developing the scientific knowledge, understandings and skills they need to make informed decisions about local, national and global issues and to participate, if they so wish, in science-related careers. In addition to its practical applications, learning science is a valuable pursuit in its own right. Students experience the joy of scientific discovery and nurture their natural curiosity about the world around them. In doing this, they develop critical and creative thinking skills and challenge themselves to identify questions, apply new knowledge, explain science phenomena and draw evidence-based conclusions using scientific methods. The wider benefits of this 'scientific literacy' are well established, including giving students the capability to investigate the world around them and the way it has changed and changes as a result of human activity.

Science Guidelines

At Warrnambool College, students entering year 10 may choose which Science subjects they would like to study. Science is a core subject at year 10 and students must complete at least two subjects from the list below.  Each module will run for one semester, with 5 lessons per week of contact time:

What will this lead to?

To be considered for a VCE subject, students need to have successfully completed at least two of these modules and it is highly recommended that students selecting science subjects in VCE have completed the Year 10 introductory course (Select Year 10 Biology if planning on completing VCE Biology). Many University courses require a minimum number of science subjects to be taken in VCE for entry. Refer to the individual subject page for more information about which Year 10 Science subject will best suit your pathway.

Duration:  5 periods per week for two semester
